[REVIEW] Aurisonics ASG-2 & 2.5 (with many comparisons)

I think one of the biggest differences was imaging and soundstage. Even though the mids were more recessed on the 1p2, they had a 3-D magic to them, and sense of wrapping you in aural bliss that was missing on the G-2.

...

Great impressions! Just a short comment: from my experience, somewhat recessed mids (as compared to diffuse field reference) are quite beneficial to a 3D soundstage presentation, as they convey a more realistic feeling of distance and depth. On the other hand, too much mids presence may sound unrealistically close and impair the spatial presentation.

Sennheiser IE80 is rated higher than Aurisonics ASG-2. May I know why please?

Sennheiser IE800 maybe more preferred to Aurisonics ASG-2, but Sennheiser IE80?

I'm personally more interested as to why the IE800 and FX700 are so low on the list.

Going by the phones I've heard, this list strikes me as somewhat bizarre.

Weli-Olive curve eh?

Of the ones I've heard
IE800>>Westone3>FX700=IE8>M5

Imo tonal balance shouldn't be judged without considering spatial presentation and the FX700 are tuned for utmost out-of-head experience, so any more mid-forwardness would be detrimental to that objective. You need to put some distance into the mids to achieve the illusion of forward projection and the Sony EX600 are actually a good example for what happens if you don't. They sound extremely wide, but have more present mids and as a result a rather shallow stage that doesn't quite seem to fit in with the width.

Ermm, when was this Olive / Welti paper published again?

Nah, not implying that what you said is based on the curve, rather the Olive-Welti conforms to the critique more.

IMO FX700 is just too much of that, recessed midrange, IE800 does it well.

Yes, I responded to the "Rate your IEMS" thread. To me, it is purely based on music I listen to. I mix, produce, and collect House, and Electronic music. I also listen to alot of vocals and strings. Indie, female vocals, and chillout. I've owned the IE80 longer so my ears have been more accustomed to the sound. I would say that soundwise, the ASG2 is technically a better iem. Really, ASG2>IE80. There are alot more details audible on the ASG2. But for just simply enjoying my music the IE80 is just ever so slightly higher on my "use" list. I have 8 different IEMS and I really love them all. The FX700 is ok, it is more the ergonomics (short cable) and the brightly sounding highs that keep me away from it. No matter what tips i use, it still makes my ears bleed! It is great with certain music, awful with certain music. The IE800 actually made me feel really guilty. It felt like I was cheating on my IE80. $1000 is alot, but since I love/d the IE8/80, it was just impossible to resist. Now...the ASG2 was an amazing deal and value for the build, quality and sound. The IE800 made me almost in a way angry and disappointed. I was expecting more...especially because I was/am such a big fan of the IE8/80s. The subbass wasn't anything special to me. The fit was very off. I couldn't find one tip that fit me. And the microphonics were bad, period. Alot/most of my decision to return them was from the fit and lack of tip options. It is not like I could even tip roll with them. They did look very classy and expensive though, like a nice piece of jewelry. You cannot go wrong with the ASG2. It is an upgrade from the IE80 in alot of ways, and I will admit it. It is just pure preference to me. I know that the ASG2 is slowly becoming my #1...it will just take more time. Everything sounds great with them. I feel as if they have burned in slightly, so the sound has evened out.

To me, the Midrange is better on the ASG2 over the IE800. And for the price difference? No doubter.

They fit, and then when they did, the microphonics were too noticeae for me to actually enjoy music. The lack of tip options was more disappointing than anything else.

THIS.

It wouldn't be so bad if they had included more tip options that were of higher quality, but they didn't.

You can kind of remedy this by cutting foam tips and placing them around the base to get a firmer seal.

I'm not a person to dislike a Sennheiser product. I own (and love) many Sennheiser headphones/IEMS! If it was even up to me, I would have made the memory ear cable even a little more stiff and included even more tips with the ASG2, but at least you can use third-party tips on the ASG2, unlike the IE800. Fit is everything with IEMS.

Now...just waiting for that ASG2 valve-port mod....

Ha!! Batten down the hatches, Dale, because you're probably going to be hearing this pretty regularly until the masses are sated... :p

Ok, Day 2 of having the two great earphones, ASG-2, and the 1plus2, side by side: things have changed.

The G-2 really grew on me. I stuck with it for some time and I get it. It's rich in the mids and bass, and the treble sparkly. It reminded me a touch of the MG6Pro, a $1k Custom with a single 13mm dynamic driver. Bass punches, mids are lush and very up front, and the treble balanced.

But the 1plus2 grew on me even more. I just don't agree that the soundstages are the same size. I think the 1p2 kills it. It reminds me of my TH900.

In fact, eke, you mentioned that you did a lot of listening through the iPhone. While that is a practical application, I wonder if you shortchanged your experience with 1p2. I tried briefly out of an iPhone, and things changed. The 1p2 is pretty revealing of the source, not at forgiving as the G-2.

That is my conclusion essentially. I went ahead and plugged them up to my Liquid Glass, and boy did the 1plus2 scale remarkably. Liquid vanilla smooth. The G-2 sounded intimate, almost shouty mids, and congested.

Hearing the 1p2 out of the LG prompted me to bust out my TH900. And I have to say the 1p2 definitely holds its own against it. The TH900 has more bass rumble, and lower midrange, but the highs and mids were both so clear and inviting. The 1p2 is a tad brighter making it sound very clear and spacious. And the soundstages were not even that far off from TH900 to 1p2.

I think the 1p2 likes a nice chain behind it, and I think it required well-recorded music. If it has that, then no-brainer for me, the 1p2 is clearly the best. If you listen to a lot of bright music, like I do, or use your earphone out of the iPhone alot, the G-2 is much more forgiving. I like the ASG-2. I like the way it sounds with bright music. I like that it is so forgiving. I am very sure I'll end up with one of my own. But again, same conclusion - if I had to pick one, 1p2 for sure.

I have a silver/gold cable on the way for 1p2. I'll be sure to comment on sonic and ergonomic differences when I get it.
