Sennheiser HD280 PRO Edit: Alternative 100 Dollar Headphones to replace these?

Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a pair of HD280's and they feel and sound great. Not sure why there's so much hate for it. :/

Anyways, I have some questions about how to keep it lasting.

1. How do I prevent the cracking on this headphone?

2. Is there a correct way to put these on so they last a long time?

3. Will a Xonar DG power these sufficiently?

4. Some tips on how to make these last for a long time?

5. How are these for gaming?

Edit: I've been looking around these forums lately and I feel like returning these. People keep saying the headband keeps cracking and these are terrible for gaming. :/ Well, those were a few years ago, Sennheiser might have updated these cans. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance. (:

I'm not sure why people hate this headphone so much either. I think it sounds pretty decent for the price, and makes a great budget closed headphone if you don't mind the clamp. Head-Fi is very FOTM, though, so the negative opinions about these might be the result of them being an older model, and being displaced by newer headphones that have spiked in popularity recently (and will likely later suffer the same fate as the HD280's).

Pioneer SE-A1000 is about $60, sounds vastly superior to HD280 (I own both.)

Their positioning is pretty incredible. Makes them amazing for gaming.

I might get the Audio Technicas ATH-AD700 after I return these. Hope my Xonar DG can power those babies.

You will likely like the se-a1000 better than the ad700.

Ad700 has significantly less bass extension, due to smaller drivers and the materials used.

I'm going to be using these for gaming (csgo, ns2, rising storm, mostly fps games). I heard the sound stage is better on the AD700? Plus, I'm not a huge basshead. Ugh, so many choices. I always think the more expensive item is better, but thinking like that has many problems and exceptions.

I'm not a basshead at all, but texture, and extension are very important. The SE-A1000 outperforms the AD700 in this respect.

With the SE-A1000 at $40-$60 depending on where you buy it, I wouldn't turn it down, personally. Big 50mm drivers, open back, amazing soundstage and imaging.

It used to be Pioneer's flagship model, but it faded in to obscurity.
