I only compared with two other headamp, SPL Phonitor and Auralic something. Both were harsh.

Bakoon is not. Bakoon is fast. It's neutral.

I'll receive a Trafomatic, Head One next week so I will compare. Trafomatic builds high quality gear at an affordable price.

Just got the HPA-21 on loan, and I pitted it against a 300B tube amplifier (it's a local brand so it's no point saying the name). I just posted my impression in the LCD-X thread here: http://www.head-fi.org/t/684394/audeze-lcd-x/3270#post_10296711

Of course, Bakoon sounds magnificent with LCD-X but IMO, with types of music I listen to, it's still a step behind this 300B amp. I also tried it with my HD650 and the result is the same.

Some info about equipments used in this comparison (nothing fancy, actually):

Source: MBP with lots of HD music (24bit and DSD) and player is Audirvana (with and without iTunes integration)

Dac: Ayre QB9 DSD

Cable: MBP to Dac = Nordost Blue Heaven

Cable: Dac to amp = HGA DNA

LCD-X Cable: Cardas Clear

HD650 Cable: SAA Equinox

Music of choice

- Country (Alison Krauss, Willie Nelson, etc)

- Quartet/Trio Jazz (Holly Cole Trio, DK: All for You, Dave Brubeck, etc)

- Standard Jazz (other DK albums, Michael Buble, and many others)

- Many titles from Stockfish, Chesky, etc, that sound good.

I mostly listen to vocal albums and don't listen to any classical or orchestra kind of work.

Having owned few tubes amps it is easy for me to imagine somebody preferring their colorations,  more dramatic/romantic presentation or added sense of spaciousness or sparkle, although not all tube amps are coloured.

Personally I am addicted to the absolute transparency the Bakoon provides and I actually find extremely difficult to describe its sound  as I feel it hasn't any, just direct connection to the music, which is unlikely to be everybody's cup of tea.

Yep, you might be right . The tube rig sure is colored. I don't think tube amp can be as transparent as SS (but given my little audiophile experience, I reserve the right to be 100% wrong).

For me, after hours of switching amps and swapping cables, I still found myself reaching for the tube rig, especially when it comes to music of my choice. As I said earlier, with Bakoon, my LCD-X sounds very, very nice, but I can't help preferring more engaging sound of the tube rig. I can understand that some may prefer music to be presented at its purest rendition without any added coloration though.

That said, Bakoon is one of the best SS amps I have heard so far, especially with LCD-X (tried Soloist and Conductor and several others but didn't like them). One thing I love about it is how quickly I can enjoy it. It takes only 10-15 minutes to operate at its full performance and operating temperature is considerably low, comparing with the tube rig, which requires at least 30 minutes to warm up and generates quite a lot of heat. If I have 3,000$ to spare, I'd surely buy one, but for now, I can only afford one of these "premium priced amps", and it's gonna be the tube rig as it happens to sound better for me with music of my choice.

I love tubes but decided to give it up as I ended spending ridiculous amount of money on them. :(

Sometimes you prefer those tubes with that headphones then you decide you actually prefer those other tubes...then you are not too sure so swap again. It is fun at first then become rather tedious in the end.

It's the exact situation I currently am in ATM LOL.

Anyone have the problem where the HPA-21 is fully charged (~6 hours for the light on the charger to go from red to green). Yet when I turn on the HPA-21, the red low battery indicator is always on.

Unit still runs for a few hours, so the red light shouldn't be on.

Not mine.

I've used my HPA-21 maybe four hours in average almost every day (or rather night) since I bought it without any problem. The battery is still good for at least six hours before the red light goes on.
