Fostex TH600 or Hifiman HE-500

Thread Starter
Currently listening to a Mac mini (Spotify 320 Kbps) -> optical -> Audioengine D2 -> Denon AH-D2000 at work. I think the sound quality is pretty decent, but I am wanting to upgrade.

Are the Fostex a big improvement over the Denon? What about vs. the HE-500? The open headphones worry me in an open work environment. How much are the HE-500 going to leak? Also, can the D1 drive the HE-500?

What's my biggest bang for buck upgrade option? Assuming headphones, but would getting something like the WA7 for the Denons improve things drastically over the D1 (I have my doubts).

The hifiman is going to leak a lot. Almost as much as laptop speakers (if you listen loud with the HE-500).

I used to think Grados leaked a lot. Then I got a hifiman... they don't leak, they haemorrhage sound.

^Posts like this makes me think I don't listen loud, but my intuition tells me I do... Seriously don't know.

I sometimes just set my HE500s on my desk and use them as speakers instead of my actual speakers.

For an open work environment,

I dont recommend HE500 at all, they leak ALOT.

Is there anywhere besides amazon that you can get TH600s in the UK? When they sell audio gear in the UK they seem to just swap the dollar for a pound sign instead of working out how much it actually costs!

Not familiar with UK retailers, but pricejapan usually has the cheapest prices and ships worldwide. They currently have the TH600 for 546 GBP shipped.

Thanks for that, any guesses as to how much it'd cost you in customs?

I'm from Canada, and bought both a TH600 and TH900 from PriceJapan. I can't comment on customs in UK as I know it's different from my country.

However, by request, you can ask PriceJapan to lower the declared customs value so you won't have to pay much taxes at all. He lowered both headphones to $150 USD. I ended up paying only about $20-30 in taxes when they arrived.

Sam, add 22% (2% duty plus 20% VAT). Apparently that's the standard rate for headphones; http://www.dutycalculator.com/dc/94478-import-duty-rate-for-stereo-headphones-is-2/

bump

Bump?

lol I might be using the word wrong here but I didn't see any impressions or comparisons. I thought bump is used the same way as it is in the for sale forum which means to make important or put first again.

I dunno.

I still don't know what ymmv means either.

You only bump something if you want to bring attention to new information that is being ignored, you have a question that is not being answered, or something you're selling is a few pages behind.

So the bump is WAAAAY out of context here.

Also it took me less than 5 seconds to google what ymmv means.
