[Impression] FiiO X3 – High Fi, Low Price. - Page 40

I have ordered the X3 now and I expect it to arrive tomorrow. I have one last question: will it be best to update it to the FW2.1 as soon as I get it or will it already come with that? I have heard that you must add a micro SD card to the X3 before you can update it. I have a 32GB card ready for it. It has about 27GB on it at the moment.

Not sure where your x3 is coming from but I got one from Amazon a week ago and it came with 2.1 installed

If it is not come with 2.1, I recommend updating as soon as it is fully charged. FiiO recommends that you use a blank SD card with only the X3.fw file on it. I suggest that you backup your SD card and format it in the X3. Then copy the firmware to the card and follow the instructions in the user's guide. I followed these steps and my update went flawlessly.

Enjoy your X3!

Cheers... Brian

I live in the UK and I am getting it from here:

http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/shop/MP3_Players.1/FiiO.406/558000/Fiio_X3_8GB_Audiophile_Digital_Music_Player.14231.htm

I got my Fiio E11 for a good price from here a few years ago too.

my one from amazon came via advanced mp3 - had 2.1 installed so it would probably be safe to assume yours should as well

I ordered mine last Friday so maybe the same / close batch

I have to say I'm very pleased with the x3 - it's a great DAP IMO and I'm happy with my purchase. Not tested the 2.14b FW yet and will more than likely wait until the "proper" release

I have the X3 now and I have one main problem with it. It is the play mode. I cant find one that lets you play a whole album and then just moves on to the album after it. I am used to my music playing in alphabetical order without having to select each album to play. It would be a bit of a shame if the X3 doesn't do this.

If anybody knows if there is a way, could they please tell me. I have been looking in the manual and I'm not sure if there is.

if you have the filename as follows, it'll work when you play all tracks:

Artist -(year) - album - (discnumber) tracknumber

This is how i have it, i hope FiiO will implement better tag support (in "play all" mode) though.

Now I have been listening to it for quite a few hours, I notice that whenever there is a very quiet bit of music that is on an Mp3, I hear quite a lot of strange hissing sounds. This is much more noticeable on my AD700s than my K550s. When I compared 320kbps Mp3s to a flac, the difference was that that background noise totally went on a flac. Mp3s sound fine to me if they don't have lots of quiet parts. I think I will replace lots of the music I like with flacs though.

Are you using the beta? Because I believe that is one of the things which the new beta will address. Might be worth waiting a little before re-encoding (or maybe just try the beta).

Are you saying that the beta version may get rid of those strange background noises I hear in the best Mp3s I can get? I can hardly tell any difference between the Mp3s that are a 320kbps and the flacs. The only difference at the moment is the background noise. If it is worth waiting, I think I will.

Yes. That's exactly what I'm saying. This is a big thread to find anything in, but one of the early reports is here:

http://www.head-fi.org/t/651769/the-fiio-x3-thread/5190#post_9804648

And I think that this is what's found it's way into this beta release:

The symptoms are exactly what you describe.

X5 EQ on the other hand is software based and therefore more adjustable (and before you ask, hardware based EQ actually has its pros as well, but that's another topic on its own). There might be a chance to implement extra software EQ into X3 in the future, but no one can confirm when it will arrive, if at all.

@ClieOS,

Quick question, now the X3 price in Amazon is quite cheap. Do you think it is better to get the X5 or X3? Or should i wait for the X1?

Also, i am a Penangite! :)

Well, that depends on how good a SQ you want. There is no doubt that X5 is better sounding than X3, and it won't be too far fetch to assume X3 will be better sounding than X1. So the question is really how far you want to go. Personally, it that's just one DAP to get, I'll go for X5 if there is no reason to hold back.

X5 is FiiO's current flagship. The X1 is entry level of FiiO in the future with the X3 sits in between them. 3 of them uses different DAC and amp. The X1 does not support DSD, USB DAC. The X5 support two memory slot instead of 1. The X1 and X5 will be easier if you have big libraries because of the scroll wheel [mechanicle] vs buttons on X3

Hope it helps

I've updated my X3 to the latest firmware 3.0 and have been using it for a week. During that time, I have experienced frequent (several per listening session ~1 hour each) screen freezes or shut-downs with screen dark, always between songs, as the player advances from one song to the next. I have had to use the reset button to restart the player each time to listen again.

Looking through my settings, I've been using gapless playback for the purpose of listening to live albums uninterrupted. Having read here on Head-Fi that gapless playback has been a problem in the past for some owners, I decided to switch gapless playback off to see if it made a difference with the spontaneous freezes/shut-downs. So far, so good. However, I lose that feature by doing so. Can you offer a solution to this problem? With this same X3 player, I had never experienced this problem before having used every prior version of the firmware to date. Will this require yet another firmware update to resolve?

I like the FiiO X3 for its sound quality, but I must say it has been quite the journey getting it to function properly and reliably! Thanks to FiiO for sticking with it so faithfully, but much too bad that it has been so necessary to iron out all the nagging problems that have come with it.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer, or anyone else who is reading this.
