[Impression] FiiO X3 – High Fi, Low Price. - Page 38

I have the latest firmware and base/treble are all you get (at least for now). You might try using another source (with more EQ flexibility) and send digital signal to X3 in DAC mode. Frankly, I am not sure whether or not EQ can be applied prior to analog conversion. Anyone know?

If not, any solutions for the X3 to have a multiple band eq?

X3 and X5 EQ system are very different. X3 EQ is built on top of a dedicated hardware chip and therefore will not change with firmware (at least not for the current firmware). X5 EQ on the other hand is software based and therefore more adjustable (and before you ask, hardware based EQ actually has its pros as well, but that's another topic on its own). There might be a chance to implement extra software EQ into X3 in the future, but no one can confirm when it will arrive, if at all.

Will the EQ still work on the X3 through the line out? If I get it, I will be wanting to strap the X3 to the E11. I also hope that I will only be able to control the volume by the E11 so I can turn the volume right down on the X3 to improve the battery life. I would much prefer using the dial on the E11 than buttens on the X3 for the volume.

No.

Using the line-out on X3 will improve the battery life naturally as X3 will disable the headphone-amp section automatically when the line-out is connected. If you double amp (*connecting the headphone-out to amp), you won't be saving power.

Given E11's SQ isn't really that much of an improvement over X3, you might not find the incentive to use it anyway. It is adding bulk for minimum SQ gain.

It will take me a long time to get used to using buttons for the volume though. I am very used to the bulk on the iAudio X5L which is bigger than the Fiio X3. I am just so used to moving round and about while being able to use the dial of the E11 sticking out the top of my pocket so I can access it more easily.

i have that compo .... they sound great ...better than fiio x3 alone.... not massively better ...and x3 is not bad at all alone

but by the way ..... i am considering now upgrading the amp : for more clarity ... wider sound stage .... more effective ( stronger ) bass boost and treble boost ( if available  ) ..... i am happy with e11 for now

I hope that makes sense.

I'm aware that I'm quoting an old posting, but later in this thread I read about typos and this one is very annoying to me:

'Artist', 'Genre', or 'Album' should be 'Unknown' if there are no tags, and not 'Unknow'.

I hope this typo will be corrected in the future.

From many of the reviews I have seen, The E11 boosts that bass quite a lot more than some other portable headphone amps. The E12 boosts it much less from what I have read.

It is good to know that the E11 improves that sound to the X3. If I was using the line out, I now know that I will only be able to use the EQ of the E11. If I put my headphones if the headphone socket of the X3, I am wondering how much it can boost the bass compared to the E11.

Could you tell me?

x3 bass boost is far more powerful than E11 but ... X3 bass boost colors the midrange a little bit ....in E11 mids stay clear and boosts little bit deeper

I use the AKG K550s with the E11 and the iAudio X5L and I boost the bass while I am traveling. I have the bass boost on 2 on the E11. The iAudio X5L Also has EQ. You can increase or decrease the bass by 24db. What it seems to do it make all the other frequencies quieter so the bass stands out more but if I use it's headphone socket without the E11, it really does mess up the sound. When I am traveling I have it on +5db. I assume the only way I could use the E11 and the X3 EQ settings together is by connecting the E11 to the headphone socket of the X3. I know this won't improve the battery life at all but it will mean I get to use the dial of the E11. I don't know why but even though you can't control the volume through the line out on the X5L, you can still use the EQ and many other things.

If I am at home not moving with the K550s I find bass boost 2 plenty for most of the time but while traveling, I just don't notice the impact of the bass much at all.

If the X3 boosts it a little bit more than the E11 does without making it sound too muddy then I think it would do fine. I think that If I was at home using the X3, The E11s bass boost will do fine. While I am out I don't think I should notice that the bass is not as deep on the X3. Well, I hope it won't be too bad anyway.

If you could tell me some more things about the X3, I would be interested. Maybe more about how you use the E11 too. I have had my E11 for over 2 years and it is still working well.

I don't have so much to tell but X3 is a great player and its bass boost is analog which is far better in my opinion than software boost in the ordinary players... i guess your K550 will be fine with it as it is a warm sounding player

Does anybody think that the X3 leather case is any good for the money? I have seen one review somewhere that said it is very cheaply made and doesn't feel like it will last long. My iAudio X5L case has lasted all the time I have had the player and still feels strong now. I would also like to know how good the silicone cases are.

I have just realized that I have been calling my iAudio X5L X3L all this time. I have corrected each time I have called it X3L.

Another reason why I have been wanting to replace it with the X3 because of the weight. The X5L on its own without the E11 already weights 183g.

Here is an image of my iAudio X5L without its leather case:

Once I have added the leather case and the E11 to the X5L, it then weighs just over 300g. The E11 does improve the sound and I think that the E11 doesn't weigh too much.

I think that the X3 will be very good as it is very lightweight and still won't be that heavy compared to what I am used to even if I do strap it to the E11.

I use a Sansa Clip+ with FiiO E06 and Koss KSC75 or Senn HD 239.

Listen to various genres - jazz, prog, metal, etc. in FLAC.

Will there be a significant improvement replacing my player & amp with a FiiO X3 and stay with the same headphones?

Thanks

You will gain a lot more by upgrading the headphones first
