I plan on pairing it with my Rx Mk3b+ and also using it with my laptop as a USB DAC to play files from my computers. My iPod is silly old and I'm in need of a high quality DAC so I figured I'd kill to birds with one stone. For those that have used it in this manner please let me know!

These are exactly the same questions i had and would love it if someone could answer.

Granted using an external amp with the X3 will sound better.  (My JH 3a does.) But, I'm not sure it is worth the extra weight & hassle to carry an amp with the X3, it sounds that good on it's own, and it's nice to just put it in my pocket and head out.  There just aren't many Head-fi people who have the X3 yet, so it may be hard to find people using it as a stand alone DAC if I understand you correctly.  I'm not sure that's even possible  . . . maybe you'll be the first to let us know !

Lol well you are correct because it can not be used as a stand alone DAC like the e17 and so on. Using the line out as a straight player isn't bad tho. So far stand alone I found pretty good results with the X3 being paired with my DT990/250 Pros which are great for home and portable use. Yes they are open but you can play them at lower volumes and people next to you can't hear your music and they are open so a lot safer if you're out for a walk. And the M50's with the DT250 velour pads give it a nice upgrade in sound and comfort.

Not certain if I'm going to keep for very long but I'm going to enjoy it for the time being before I sale it and use the funds to upgrade my ancient iPod Video.

Cool player tho cool player

Thanks,

Hello there everyone. I'm thinking of buying this player, but there is one thing that stops me — I have low impedance Beyerdynamics Custom One Pro (16 om). My current player is Colorfly Colorful c3 and the noise sometimes just killing me. So, the question is would it be same story with Fiio?

^ there is a hi / lo gain switch on the X3.  I checked on my AKG 702 (32 ohm) and they sounded better with the low gain setting.  I'm guessing you'd be ok with the Custom One Pro & X3 set to low gain.

hahaha....it's not a physical switch but more like an option to change from low to high or vice versa...

Yup it's right there in "Player Settings".

I download all my mp3 content from 7digital and have hundreds of albums, many of which are live, where gapless playback is a must.

Currently I play the live albums on a Cowon i9, which plays gapless flawlessly. I bought it just for this feature, the high quality sound was a bonus.

Wanting to upgrade to a FiiO X3, I read through this forum and tried to get as much info about gapless playback as possible.

It seems that the X3 likes ID3 tags to play gapless, so I contacted 7digital to ask if they encode their downloads with these tags.

The reply I got was that they don't encode the mp3's with ID3 tags, but they are encoded for gapless playback?

Not sure how the Cowon processes the data then?

Has anyone out there got an X3 and play live albums downloaded from 7digital without any problems?

No, it is not about the tag or the encoding process (assuming the files have been encoded correctly of course). X3 currently supports gapless by building a database, that's why it has to be updated into the player's internal library to work. It is a problem caused by how the firmware's structure is wrote in the first place. To fix this and make gapless universal (and in playable just by the files browser and no need to update the library), FiiO has to redone the basic structure, which will take time. They are already working on it, just not sure how long it will take.

I am listening to my X3 after 30 hours flat burn-in..but still I feel that E17 sounds better than X3. My Xperia S (with JB) has similar sound quality as X3

I started feeling that I wasted my money on X3 :(

Does it need more burn-in? or is it picky towards IEMs? I'm using Brainwavz M2 IEM

Many thanks for your reply ClieOS.

So as long as I transfer my individual music album folders into the Fiio's internal library, then I should get gapless functionality the same as I get on my Cowon i9?

The internal library, is that linked to the internal memory only, or will it work with with a 64GB Micro SD Card?

I'd hate to spend £200, including 64GB Micro SD Card, just for me to go backwards in functionality.

can the X3 support 128 GB of micro SDXC card?
