The Astell & Kern AK120 - Page 44

Have anyone compared the actual sound quality between the production unit AK-120 vs HM-901?

Sorry if this question has been answered.

They are on the same Level IMO. 901 can drive different phones more linear than AK120 IMO. So for ak120, you will need to find the right pairing. They both have musical sound signature. AK120 focuses on the whole presentation which is full and smooth. 901 focuses more on mids presentation. The soundstages are about the same sizes, ak120 to my ears has a bit more depth, 901 has better portion of depth and width. They both sound extremely neutral and good when amped. 901 with balanced amp card can produce more powerful, faster sound than ak120. But ak120 can produce a more exquisite sound.

The technical ability of 9018 is a little bit superior IMO.

I think the challenge should be "How to make the best sound setup with smaller dimension and better battery life" instead of "How to redesign the same DAP with better UI , same battery life and larger design?".

I agree, that was a nice joke, made me chuckle a bit , pretty true since nearly every single audiophile player is largely a BRICK or a stack of stuff that is also the size of said brick , the challenge is after all is to make a dap that can stay in our pocket yet still sound nice, which seems to be extremely hard to do

True. I wish someone can fit a dx100 sound into a ak100 size. That's just not possible.

Never say never ;). As technology matures I'm sure it will be possible. Just a matter of technology and implementation :).

I am sure this will be a reality in the near future.

If using Line-Out with a proper portable headphone amp for both AK120 and HM-901, which DAP will "potentially" sound much better than the original condition (without amp)?

It is possible to do it now but R&D is something very few company invest in.

Is it difficult one to open the AK120 if wants to look inside or to replace the battery?

Also what exactly mean dual mono dac? Both channels will be mono, but will sound stereo? Like vinyl?

Sorry about the silly questionsrolleyes.gif.Thanks

This is hard to say actually. It will probably be ak120 because it's not designed for every headphone. I didn't remember I had that wow feeling when I pair 901 with my amp like I did with ak120.

Sorry if this question has been answered.

I had demoed the 901 briefly for only about 15 mins but I think it doesn't outclass the AK120.  It was paired with the stock card and I was pairing it with my TG334.  I was told by the store the IEM card will give a flatter response that enhance soundstage and bring more clarity to IEMs without giving up the density/power of sound.  I had actually signed up on the waiting list but the AK120 won me over with the same level of sound and similar price (901+optional IEM card) but in a much smaller and sleeker package.

I actually liked DX100's sound signature more than the hifiman sound (too warm and too much mids coloration) and I think AK120 is the closest thing to an AK100 size/interface/battery with DX100 sound.  Too bad it cost way more than either of them.

if you up it to 120 size , i think you can, but you will have to forgo stuff like 1/8 headphone out gain switches , it will also have a rather ****ty battery life

miniaturization RnD is something very very seldom to be invested in , its easier to just add in power compared to miniaturizing the components

Just give me a dap with Cowon battery life, DX100 power + sound quality, DX50 storage capacity, Rockbox UI, AK120 build quality + size, all at the price of an X3....then we can call it a day. wink_face.gif

Hold your breath and wait for that....

I'not that concern about miniaturisation.

I Will prefer a much larger DAP that offer the "very ultimate" sound without the need for an additonal Amp.

--> HEY M. NAGRA... Please make un a DAP ! :-)

Today my Ultimate "transportable" setup is... 5 Kilos : RWAK 100 + RWA Bellina Pro HPA + Fostex TH900.... All this fitted in a carying case !

I know I am Crazy... But this is what out hobby is all about... Isn't it. :-). ?
