The Astell & Kern AK120 - Page 304

Just finished 5 hours listening to 1.37. Had a scare, about the 5th song in the AK would not play, it froze. I forgot what the the display said. Powered down, turned back on and no problems thereafter. I listen on shuffle mode and the gap between songs still averages 4 seconds, this I never liked.

The sound, maybe its all in my head (hehehehe) I do hear what Ian talked about, crisper high, more space and better bass. Happy I updated.

Still 0 sound out of both USB 3.0 ports on my Macbook Pro retina 2013 in DAC mode.  Sad how it still doesn't work.  One of the reasons I got my a k120.  So I can use it as a portable dac for videos and games on my laptop when not at home.

Are you using the USB cord that came with the AK?

Yes, it was usb connect. The options below allow you to switch without unplug the cable as previous version.

For $500 you can easily get a nice custom from Custom Art (Poland). Music Two is a new model and probably is the best choice for casual listener. He also has other models for pro monitoring.

I got the Astell & Kern AK120.
I've several IEMs, old and new (E3c Shure, Etymotic ER-6i, Ultimate Ears Super.Fi 5 Pro, Philips Fidelio S2) and I also have the Grado SR80 and AKG K701.
But I would like a new IEM that I can do to better appreciate the quality of the player.
I am particularly interested in the definition of the sound and the spatiality of the scene. What do you recommend with a price within $ 500? Westone 4R? Etymotic ER-4PT? Shure SE535? Or the new Sony XBA-H3? Other universal models easily purchased in Europe?
Thank you for your help.

Upgrading firmware now... anyone else have a DICM folder in their root folder? Mine has a folder with 'camera' within the DCIM as though a new model might have a camera?? Didn't put the folder there, is weird.

Seems to work, can now switch when its plugged in, time changed..... testing if it can handle a 32bit float .WAV file, glad they picked up on that one.....  yeah, works well with 32bit float... the AK120 now plays 32bit/192 files! Kick Ass.

Notice it charges while playing or something, the battery bar has gone red as I'm trying it.

DICM folder vanished... must've been my sandbox software.

It was only the other day I saw mention of 32 bit files, they were saying they surpass DSD in sound quality and now we have them supported.. One question? Are there any sites selling such things?

Yeah, type 32bit into amazon's music search and it comes up with quite a few....

... this is where a decent vinyl set up does well, cheaper in the long run slightly more than CD's, get a good turntable, needle and amplifier to record to a PC with and you're set.

Not sure if it has been reported before but for those looking at purchasing a brand new AK120, it may interest you to know that there will be a titanium model of the AK120 to be released just before Christmas 2013 - unless there is some major hiccup on iRiver part :D  It will retail for US$1499. That is all the information I have.

Thanks Goldlion, will do.

Oh oh happened again. The AK does not show the memory cards and the error message is 'can't find song'
I did not scan the library after the update and will do that. Hopefully that will fix.

I've been thinking about the problem with the AK not showing up on the MAC. I think that happened to me when I did not properly eject the disks. I did something in the Disk utility and it showed again. I'll try remember and post.
