The Astell & Kern AK120 - Page 301

Thanks Saraguie, my enthusiasm for this update is not diminishing, I can't wait to get home and hear it through the TU-05 and T5P's. Anyone else updated yet, if so, am I crazy or does what I describe ring true to you as well?

Waiting for my AK to charge to do the update.  I have the 1.32, was unwilling to let it go for a while because "when it works don't fix it" but sounds like this is getting some improvements that i may actually use.

As far as the talk and comparison i have been reading earlier, although i was a big advocate of the 801 and really loved it, the AK120 is a big step up in SQ as well as interface and size.  Also plays all files i need, so worth it to me.  Feel bad for the poor 801 but i will probably take it to Mexico on vacation and leave the AK safe at home.

Noticed that I can't set the time on mine today.... its stuck in AM and won't move into PM as the screen won't allow me to change it... as in it does not react. Everything else is fine it just won't let me change from AM - PM... did notice some harsh highs but thought it had to do with the recording, will upgrade and see if anything changes.

Not an accurate comparison, if the new guilded purse had an extra more secure opening for you to use and offered a balanced weight distribution while in the hand then it work... or something :-/

The mod offers a balanced output from dual channels distributing a signal from an improved pair of DACs. It tops the 120 with grace and ease and would likely give any new device iriver have in the works a run for its money also.

Basically, if I were to offer you a RW modded 120 with an RSA 71b and a Pico slim for portable use... would you take it? How much more would you use it over the stock 120 you own now?

Could you listen to it and carry on with the stock 120 afterwards?

I doubt it friend... I doubt it :p

I wouldn't or certainly not 1/2 as much. My pockets aren't that large and my home kit would smoke it. Why I didn't try the 901. Love the AK120 for exactly what it is. Nothing wrong with others wanting it to something else.

Also nothing wrong with the gilding a purse comment if it makes it more appealing to the owner. That wasn't a dis but you should have been able to know that from reading the entire post.

Didn't take of fence, I was joking with you in my reply .lol. People don't get offended over what audio player people choose to listen to do they? Strange world.

I agree with what you said for the most part and am having trouble 'desecrating' the device with a mod when it not only sounds fine with its stock amp and DAC combo but is also a well manufactured product... would be cumbersome with a Pico slim dangling off of it. I intend to do it for the balanced out function more than anything but as iRiver said, they listened x amount of times to the device and have obviously matched its amp and twin chip set to suit each other, there's nothing wrong with it....  to be honest I would rather a 901 if I was going to buy it TO modify it explicitly, swapping out the amp card and checking out user made versions is a true modifiers dream.

Its charging now so I can't tell what version its using but it updated automatically when I tried and failed to use the iRiver software to transfer files.... that program wins hands down for uselessness I mean, its about as intuitive as a rock on crack. Noticed the problem today at the gym figured I'd set the time and it wouldn't let me, is just stuck on AM, screen won't allow me to set it to PM at all.

Will upgrade it tomorrow and see what happens.

ahhhh understand now, thanks. Never tried the iRiver program and from what you and others say, never will.

I'm still debating whether to update 1.33......i'm pretty happy right now.

Yeah, forget the program... cowon sows it up for software Jetaudio is and always will be my go to program for what it does, used it today to convert an entire collection of compresses FLAC files to uncompressed FLAC and .WAV and it flew right through them.

Problem with the time is on the device itself though, not to do with the software.... siblence in the highs on some tracks also.

EDIT: Using iGrados and AKGL171MII... weary of what a pair of Alpha Dogs would do if siblence is an issue on those.

Installed it no problem - haven't had time to listen much yet though.

Installed 1.37 last night and having first listen on bus to work. I'm using RW-B and balanced in to out. So not sure good comparison but cymbals on songs seem a lot clearer......could be my ears though!!

Edit. Could also be everything burning in!!!

I just picked up the AK120. SQ is amazing.

Do any of you guys use the iriver app to transfer music to the AK120? I am really struggling to work out how to use it.

I can transfer to the device by transfering to the 'music' folder and then accessing the music via the folders icon on the AK120 but I then cannot see any of the music via the 'album' or 'artist' button on the AK120. Strange - I will keep experimenting but I suspect there is an obvious answer to this.

My apologies if there is an FAQ guide for this stuff around here somewhere. thanks.

I gave up with their software and just drag and drop music folders to AK120 drives on computer.

Try running a scan and may add to artist and album buttons.
