I kinda figured as much :). Even my response was self explanatory. If your gear (headphones/IEMs) are not up to snuff there really is no reason to spend so much on the source as you'd be limited by resolving power/technical ability of said gear. So in that aspect I can agree with what Miceblue said. But other than that I still think he's fooling himself. ;)...

As to the differences I don't know. I only heard the AK100 once and that was a few months before I got my 120 so I could not say about the differences in sound quality.

I did not like the RWA AK100. I just don't think it was nearly as good as it was made out to be on the forums. Just MO :). AK120 is definitely a lot better to these ears. Of course I still wanted to push the envelope regardless.... :)

Not that I'm saying I agree with the $1,300 pricing because it is exorbitant for sure. But the product also sounds damn good, has a good UI, lots of capacity, and better build quality from what I've seen on the X3 (as it should at its price). Between the DX100 and the AK120 I'd take the AK120 any day.

It's just that the X3 offers so much of what the AK47120 offers at 1/4 1/6 (I thought the X3 was $300 USD) the price.

Sheesh, I didn't think people would give me so much FLACk about that. XD

Feature AK120 X3
24/192 Yes Yes
DSD Yes No
Battery Life 14 hours 10 hours
Line Out No Yes
Digital Out No Yes
Optical Out Yes No
Max Memory 192 GB 72 GB
Screen 2.4-inch 320 x 240 2.4-inch 240x320
Buttons +/-, P/P +/-, P/P, FF, RW

Power output of the AK120 was unlisted, but I'm pretty sure the X3 has a higher power output rating.

So basically you're paying 6 times the price for better sound quality, DSD playback, another micro SD card slot, and a touchscreen, and I find that unjustifiable. I'll get the chance to hear the AK120 in a few months but I don't think it'll be worth more than the price of an Audeze LCD-2 2013.

LoL.... the whole purpose of music playback is to get a better sound quality, that's what most people are paying for.

@Cosmic, i have RW moded AK100 but i do not have Rolex, does this mean i am not qualified? actually i do not like Rolex watches, none of their models, their design makes me feel sick.... actually i prefer Swatch watches much better... but if we feel snobbish how about Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet or Breguet, or at least A.Lange & Sohne? ouch, forgot to add

I'm just looking for the AK120 umodded version of a Patek. Say  a self winding sweep second with moon phase, day/month with a plain leather strap. My Rolex is getting heavy to wear.

I believe you are after an annual calender dear sir, very wise choice indeed, one adjustment a year and save up to 55% on a perpetual calender .............

I was an avid Patek collector in the 90s when I was working.....

By the way, how was the trip in Hong Kong. Shame we couldn't get together!

It was good thanks. Great city, managed to drag the family to Jaben for 15 minutes on Saturday night.

Enjoyed my time in China altogether.  Fact: there are 6 million people in Hong Kong S.A.R. on 382 sq. miles ........ Honolulu ( whole Island of Oahu) has 935,000 people on 597 sq. miles.  I LOVE big cities but I need to put a U.S. in front of cities. I did not know what a BIG city was until this trip.

Ianmedium, thanks for the response. Glad to see you're enjoying the AK120. I suspect I am going there myself as well. Hard to argue with portable 24bit playback through dual dacs no less! Will report back on my impressions once I do take the plunge.
