I was on 1.32 but updated to 1.33 now since I thought it might fix the DAC issue.  Any word on the next firmware from AK?

I have firmware 1.33 and when I plug it in using a USB cable to my laptop or PC's, the AK120 screen gives me a choice and I select the "USB DAC".

Once I select that on the AK120, the my Windows machine installs a built-in USB driver.

Then in the Control Panel/Sound/Playback, I have a new audio device called "Speakers/iriver USB DAC". I set that as "default", and then all the sound from my PC will output to the AK120's headphone jack.

I can check on my Macbook, but I think it is similar to setup. You have to set the AK120 as the default sound output device.

Hi darinf, How you doing?  I was planning to go to the San Diego meet but that happened to be the day I fly out too.  So couldn't make it.

Yeah, when I plugged it in I get the choice for USB DAC.

As for the setting, Yeah i tried setting the control panel/ sound/playback to river USB DAC.  I also tried to set it directly to a k120 within media players too with no help.

As for my mac,  I use the audio MIDI setup to change.  I use to use that with all my different DACs at home and works perfectly.

Not sure why but getting 0 sound at all when I change to USB DAC on the ak120.  I have tried it on 3 computers now.

hmm, this is surprising, i got both fiio x3 and ak120, apparently my x3 drives the sennheiser momentum better than ak120, i just need to turn to vol 24 on fiio x3 and is loud enough, 50 on ak120 is not as loud as that and the bass is better on fiio x3, this surprised me a lot given the price diff in the 2 dap

The x3 has one of the most powerful amps of all DAPs and is considered weightier sounding than neutral so not that surprising. AK120 should still be a more open and refined player capable of driving those. Volume setting is inconsequential.

I believe it only works on USB 2.0 ports and will not work on USB 3.0 ports.

Did you set it to operate as a DAC when plugging in the USB?

Sorry, missed the other replies... USB variants are backwards compatible it shouldn't matter what USB device you use with any USB port.

Is not true with my MBP Retina. Facing the computer, the left UEB port did not work and the right did.

Also try to use the cable that came with your AK. When trying to transfer songs directly to the AK, the Kindle USB cord would charge my unit, however the drives wold not be recognized with it.

Hi Hiyono: Yes, too bad you missed the meet. Glad you're still on Head-Fu though.

I just tried my Windows 8 laptop. The USB 3.0 port does not work. The DAC shows up as a device, but no sound comes out of the headphone jack.

Then on the same laptop, I tried the USB 2.0 port and then everything worked great.

I tried a desktop Windows 8 PC, and when plugged into the USB 3.0 port, the AK120 didn't even show up as a DAC on that machine.

So, it seems that USB 3.0 ports will not work for some reason.

Ok...my first time using the AK120 as a DAC..... hooked up to my USB 3.0 port with the supplied cable, driver loads automatically... playing Amon tobin sample, it works.... the only difference is that mine isn't a true USB 3.0 its a PCI Express USB 3.0... it also shows in my audio program as 'Iriver USB DAC' and plays from there also.

Voices sound excellent on this thing. Damn.

Is strange, a USB port should be a USB port, imagine the carnage if USB 3.0 didn't work with USB standard and USB 2.0.... its all backward compatiable there should be no reason for 3.0 to not work with USB 1.0/2.0.

Will try on another device when I can get my hands on it.... got the new windows tablet somewhere.  oh yeah, won't work, its the closed OS version not the pro.... the only variant here is that my USB 3.0 ports are via PCI Express.

.... it is a big variant... but its the only one .lol.

My old MacBook Pro works. I guess you guys are right about the usb2.0. Hope they have a fix for it soon.

Can it be isolated as a Mac problem?

I get the same problem from my Dad's laptop which is an Asus windows8 with usb 3.0.  0 sound.
