BTW, I thought it wasn't possible to rollback the FW to the proper level for ripping SACD's once it had been upgraded?  I understood that Sony wanted to prevent folks from doing so?

Yes, this is a common misunderstanding.  If the PS3 hardware is one of the correct units, but the software has been advanced past 3.55, it CANNOT be rolled back simply with a software modification.  And it is more complicated than just flashing the firmware. Two nand chips have to be removed from the motherboard and read in a nand programmer then modified and reflashed with the modified nand then resoldered to the motherboard.  I found someone who does this for $100.  So if you find a cheap PS3 that is past 3.55, and it is one of the correct units, it CAN be taken back to 3.55.

There are lots of post 3.55 units out there that are going for a decent price.

Just got my AK120 back from Red Wine Audio.

Fully Balanced Audio Nirvana!!!

Impressions to come after I put some hours on it but first thing I noticed with the LCD-2s, now that I'm feeding the Lightning a cleaner, balanced, more powerful signal, it only requires a quarter turn on the volume knob vs a half turn that my iphone required.  Might have to switch it to medium gain vs high gain.

Impressive, but I would like to know what's the config for your black dragon cable.  Is it just TRRS to RSA?  And I throught that Moon Audio doesn't make anything that short?

The black dragon is the RSA plug that goes to my JH16s.

The top cable is the one Vinnie (RWA) sells, its RSA to TRRS fully balanced.  He makes them in any length.

I also have a custom RSA to TRRS coming from Whiplash next week.  Its very hard to find low profile Right angle TRRS plugs.

This one looks like it's a bit smaller/more manageable than the Chinese one that I bought.

Am i the only one shocked to see people spending £1k plus on a dap, and then needing to use an amp with it?

....don't forget the $600 to $700 extra for the mod to 'amp only' use.

People mod supercars all the time, but it doesn't mean those cars sucks in stock form.

As a percentage of disposable income many of these people are spending less for their portable rig than the average iPhone buyer is.

I have said this before and will repeat it. Something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it!

I can look at my system and go Yikes but in truth what I have spent over the years in portable HiFi has given me the best returns in terms of enjoyment, relaxation and as a hobby. In fact, make that all my HiFi purchases!

Now me, I have no time for phones, the simpler the better! All these smart phones do nothing for me. In fact, if it were not for needing one for work I would not have one at all but if others like to spend hundreds of dollars on them and get a lot of enjoyment out of them more power to them!

It would be a dull world indeed if we all liked the same things and thought the same way!

Unless the Tera has gone up again in the last five minutes, I think the AK120 is the most

expensive DAP there is. I would imagine the amp to be at least the equivalent of a $400 portable amp.

I guess if the line out is good, and you have an amp that sounds like $500+ it

might be worth it. But it does seem to defeat the object of the product in the first place.

Or is there something wrong with the AK's amp that makes people want to change it?

I love my GS Voyager, superb amp, but the amp in the HM-801 sounds better to me,

well more different than better, but then again I am an old HIFI nut who thinks that

most well designed and well built amps sound the same. Or should do.

Amps have a very simple job to do. "A straight wire with volume pot" as someone once said.

I'm expecting my rwak120-b mod Monday. Was it a financially sound decision........for me, if I can get daily enjoyment out of it for the next X years, then yes.

Will I still be able to feed my family and have roof over their heads......absolutely. Otherwise it would be a very irresponsible decision.

Would my friends back home understand.....maybe a few but most would think its crazy. Then most have music collection of a dozen or so CDs and have little time for music!!

While without ak120 I am using my iPod 7th gen to intruder with balanced Chris himself pure silver plus gold cable to se535ltd. I didn't get the chance to listen to balanced out with ak120 but am really noticing better separation and detail with just the iPod. I even thought to myself I could live with this and be happy.

But then that old little devil popped up on my shoulder and whispered.....just think what the fully balanced ak120 could sound like!!

That's why I am here....the what ifs/coulds!

Next will be some totl ciem purely for the what could it be like and them hopefully I can sit back, relax and enjoy my free time (when get some) with some great sounds.

Congratulations!

You can switch on the EQ, lowering signal level by about 4db which will allow more headroom for your volume pot on the amp. I tend to do this on both my RWAK 100S and 120S especially with IEMs.
