Defective AK120?

I have the Sen IE800 and found the bass very lacking both on FW 1.00 and 1.21 (worse on 1.21). I get great bass out of the RWAK100. I also tried amping the AK120 (Apex Glacier) and when I do that the bass is fine.

Is the cause the approx 3 ohm OI of the AK120 (the Glacier is 2 ohm so not that different)? Many on this thread like the AK120 with IE800 so do I have a defective AK120? The mids and highs seem ok; just lacking in bass. I am not one that can easily distinguish subtle differences so this is a case of significant lack of bass compared to RWAAK100 or AK120 amped.

It just sounds strange that there could be something wrong that only impacts the low end. Asking to determine if I should exchange it or return it (I want to be able to use it without amp).

Thanks

I may have had issues with the sound with the various FW's on the AK120 (currently 1.1 beta with Listrid 1.0, which I'm liking) but lack of bass with my IE800's wasn't one of them.  I have the RWAK100 (w/2.01 FW ) was well and find the bass to be comparable between the two.  I'm not sure what to tell you what that means regarding your particular AK120 though.

Thank you, now if I could try them out with the AK120. How the RE-400 compare to Yamaha EPH 100?

I haven't heard the Yamaha. But a lot of people said the RE-400 is the best money can get for $99. I can confirm it sounds really great. Better than my TDK IE800 and Shure 310.

How much better RE-600 are then RE-400 with AK120 or any other DAP?

Is it worth getting the RE-600?

I have no idea. Just go to the RE-600 topic and ask some people. The RE-600 is not yet released internationally so not a lot of people have it. It's 4X the price of RE-400 but I'm pretty sure it won't be 4X better. Diminishing returns..

Hey Gintaras, good to know you still like the RWAK100! So the upgrade bug bites you already? 1+2 wink.gif?

I have the AK120 now and to me it fixed everything that was missing in the AK100.

I prefer the RE-600 over the 400. Subjectively, they just seem to be more lifelike in the way that they present the music. While I don't own the AK120, I have compared both using my Tera-Player, D7, DX100 and Tera/Vorzamp combo. They suffer somewhat when directly driven from the Tera, but with the Ety 75 ohm adapter, they sound just fine. I prefer using them balanced from my desktop or iBasso PB2 as that seems to bring out their best in imaging and depth of soundstage.

Yes and No.  RE-600 are definitely worth getting if you would be using it balanced as intended (it is terminated balanced in 3.5mm TRRS plug, with a TRRS to normal stereo 3.5mm converter).  When used in single-ended mode, it is still better than RE-400 but I can understand people who may not feel it's worth the extra.

Construct, size, materials are mostly the same.  You paid for for a better cable, the TRRS termination, better driver, and different (which I like better) tuning.
