Hey KK..........Mimouille actually put my thoughts into words, these are his impressions and agree 100%.

"I felt like you at first 'AK120 vs my ak100 modded (which I told him I the AK100 was better), but now after 2 or 3 days and using eq pro, I think it sounds great. The ak120 sound has much more note weight and depth and not only in the bass...the mids and even highs are weightier, more palpable. It feels like a higher class player than the ak100. The thing is the ak100 being thinner, it had naturally more air"

I agree with him......more note depth to me means decay, the notes last longer.

I have to say though, that the Mezzo Modded AK100 with the Listrid UI is very, very good. I had to really listen hard to hear the difference. And the owner of Mezzo, Phanom is a pleasure to deal with. A genuine nice guy and who loves audio just like us.

Just a few impressions on the first pairings with AK120 on 1.00:

  • With the Miracles, nice pairing but to me, it changes their signature a bit. The Miracles are normally very airy and a bit thin in the mids. With AK120, they have more bass, thicker mids, more note weight accross the range and less air. So it is more a matter of taste. I am wondering if there is a matter of output impedance. AK120 is 3 ohms I think so a perfect pairing is at least 24 ohms but the Miracles are 16ohms. What do you guys think ?
  • With the Spiral ear SE5, very nice, close to the TP, slightly warmer and more bassy (just had a brief listen as I am waiting for new cables for the SE5)
  • With the Kaede (listening right now) EXCELLENT pairing. The brightness of the Kaede balances the warmness of the AK120 on 1.00 so great dynamics, great space, great everything.

Well if you two are after the ultimate in that type of signature (airy presentation) look into the 3rd ANV. It still holds the crown for airy sound. The RWA AK100 wasn't nearly as airy for me yet still was more fatiguing (strange).... I agree with you both on the AK100 having good note weight/body to the entire presentation. It has an analog-like sound to it while still being very detailed and generally balanced as a whole. It's a warmer sound signature but done right IMO. The sound staging is also rather large but even more so on 1.21.

Honestly I do not know. I do not find the SE5 overly warm. They sound good with the 1.00 so I will not take the risk. Anyways the SE5 is more for the TP :)

I see. Any impression about the AK120 + SE5 pairing. I'm interested in getting one but want to make sure that it is at least as good as TP + SE5 pairing.

I will try this week a bit more and let you know. So far, more similar than different to TP, on the organic / warm side. But the AK120 packs more punch. Really need to do good listening to give you real impressions.

Thanks! Looking forward for your impression. It seems that TP has a serious competition.

Looking to hear more about AK120 and SD3 when you get them back?
I am really pleased with their build quality. And price will increase at the end of the month.

For anyone who is amping their AK120 if they have any resistor connect the resistor the headphone out of your AK120 (or into your lineout of your amp). It cleans a lot of the hiss and makes the bass a lot tighter.

So the AK120 doesn't have a black background?
