Coming from an HM-801 and DX100 I could scarcely believe how petite it is. Although I'd prepared myself for this, I didn't really believe that the tiny little box the post-lady was holding could accommodate the AK120 box I'd seen on the internet about a thousand times; I thought it was something my wife must have ordered!

I know it cost shed-loads of money but from the point-of-view of ergonomics, aesthetics and desirability, it's everything I hoped it would be.

I had copied a whole load of flac 16/44.1s and some 24/96s to a micro sd card so I could do a quick comparison with the DX100. But the thing is, the sound is slightly different so on one track I'd start thinking, "oh no, what have I done" and then I'd think, "actually, that sounds lovely"! The long and short is that I have absolutely no regrets. I've hardly taken out my Miracles all day (apart from the odd conference call - work is such an intrusion to serious listening!). I did find the bass rather lean at first but  honestly, within an hour it had filled out nicely, and now is very balanced. I am really enjoying the sound. It's detailed, spacious and very smooth (un-fatiguing).

I think it's really amazing that something so small can produce such lovely sound. I tried the line-out in my car earlier and was impressed; the DX100 line-out has always been a disappointment to me. Certainly the HM-801 was much better than the DX100.

Anyway, I need to focus on listening to ELP's Tarkus now. If you've never heard of that then I envy your youth.

Thank you all for your valuable comments on this super little machine, and helping me decide to spend a fortune! (anyone want to buy an 801 and/or DX100? :-)

Cheers,

Tony

Congratz!  You would appreciate the size and UI even more as you continue to use it on a daily basis.  It cost a truckload of money but I have yet to find someone really regretting over its quality.

You are welcome
I am sorry I don't have HEX 1.00 firmware

The plus point from HEX 1.21 firmware is USC dac function , USB dac pair with my iMac the SQ is better than my ibasso DB 1 dac / amp .
More detail , transparent , faster , very good bass detail , clean and clearer mid
IMO

Thanks Rudi.  Need Jmoon to the rescue and hopefully this time he'll bring the right file!

Hello all,

After letting the AK120 play all night, I am listening again. This player is quite impressive to me. Apart from the killerl looks, lovely leather case and great ergonomics (I just popped the 2 SD used in my AK100 and everything works perfectly right away, playlists included), the SQ is quite something. Such body and authority in the sound for such a small device is great. I find it warmer and more intimate sounding than the DX100 from memory, and compared to the AK100 mod stage 2, also a bit warmer but much more body and weight to the sound. The AK120 is quite akin to the Tera player IMO, but with more power.

I will wait to have a version of 1.00 Hex before I try the 1.21 Hex because I do not want to be stuck with it.

So far I am only using the Miracles, because I want to be able to have a reference for burn in. After a couple of days I will try 1Plus2, SE5 and Kaede (and SD 3 when I get them back for loan).

Honestly the 1.21 is not that bad. It expands the 3D sense of warmer IEM by a large margin.

True. 1.21 and 1.00 has their own pros and cons in sound and even as someone who will go with 1.00 I can't say it is "better" than 1.21. But Mimouille is right to be prudent and only experiment when a 1.00 HEX is posted.

I do not think they will release 1.00 as is, it had issues with mp3 and likely they are working on restoring the sound to the way it was on 1.00 by fixing mp3 related issues.

Yup I think they had included a number of "fixes" in 1.21. The ironic part for me is that I have had absolute NO, ZERO, NADA issue on 1.00 but with 1.21 I got USB DAC (+ve) but changed sound (-ve) and card random dismounting (-ve) for me. Considering my use case/scenarios I am better off with 1.00. YMMV.

Thanks for your help.

It defaults to email outside business hours but during the day it's a live chat facility.

What do you mean by playlists? You got your device to recognize synched playlists?

No synced playlists. I export in M3U, change to pls, change the directories with ctrl H and change the \ to /. I only update my playlists once in a while so it's ok.
