How about DX100 & HM-901 (if you have  listened to it) , did you feel hot from the body if you continuously listening them for more than 4 hours?

The DX100 gets noticeably warm and even more so when in your pocket. The Hifiman 601 I had also ran somewhat hot. Seems you've been looking for a DAP for a long time now?

Tough choice among ivy league of DAP: HDP-R10 (DX100), HM-901, AK120 & X5

But HM-901 is in shortage mode and Fiio X5 will be released by end of this year.

The only choice at the moment is between HDP-R10 (longer battery life & slighly better sound quality) and AK120.

Your choice HDPR 10 and AK 120 are the right choice now
These two DAP are the best DAP at the moment IMO

FiiO hasn't even released the official specs yet and you are already considering it to contend with DAPs that have already been well established? For all we know the thing will sound like a typical FiiO product, which isn't held in high regards by heavy enthusiasts...

tongue.gif I think the X5 could surprise us all though. I would think this product would be in league with the AK100, Studio, DX50, etc.

AK120 has a pricing problem if you ask me. 1300 $ is nice but in EU we have to pay 1300 € than things are changing a bit. If somebody would purchase it for 1300 dollars and somehow would come to Eu region and send it to me I would buy it for 1300 $ which is a bit less than 1k €.

Btw, yeah it is some kind of announcement. If someboby is travelling between Eu region and other parts of the world where AK120 is sold for 1300 $, would they help me, buying it from 1300 $ and selling it to me for the same amount of money? I feel bad for saying it like that but I am still a student who can not live without music and loves music so much but in the same time doesn't earn much money. 1 year left for finishing my master then hopefully I can get my hands on the toys I want rolleyes.gif

Actually I demo'ed the new Fiio X3 and it sounded really nice, and I won't be surprised if some would prefer it over the AK100 soundwise. While I agree with Rudi that the HDRP10/DX100 and AK120 are the two best DAP available on the market now, the X3 is easily the best sound for the buck DAP.

Lee is spot on that the X5 may surprise many.  On the flip side it could also flop badly with X3 raising their own bar so much.

If iRiver can reduce the price of AK120  to USD $1K same level as basic model of HM-901, for sure it would gain more respect from head-fiers and more people will support this model.

I'm not sure what is the market share for AK120 among the head-fi community?

I totally agree. If they could match or beat the price of the DX100/Hifiman 901 they would sell like hot cakes and iRiver would stand to make a lot more money IMO in the long run.

this is why i sit on the fence for X5 instead of pulling trigger on AK120, feel happy with RWAK and T1 for the time being. that's not to say AK120 is not perfect but i want to hear about more DAPs before deciding. where is DX50 by the way?

Well Gintaras that's really all that matters. If you are satisfied with your gear. Great! :) But if you want to continue to improve things I think it's still possible. But it comes at a premium (and in some cases a savings lol, I'm sure you know what I mean) :P.

So after reading through the 81 pages of this thread I pulled the trigger on an AK120 and Senn IE800's. Both arrived this morning. I've not had time to do anymore than unbox them both but my initial impression is that the AK120 is WAY smaller than I'd imagined, is built beautifully and has a retro feel to it. I plan on spending some time doing some critical listening with both the IE800's and my trusty HD800's over the next few days and then posting some impressions. IMHO way too many price related posts and not enough relating to the SQ of the player itself.

I've been a lurker for a long time. So far it's cost my wallet the HD800's, a Woo WA2, a Cyrus DAC X, Cyrus CDXT SE2 and Cyrus Stream XP. The HD800's are probably the best money I've ever spent on audio gear. Seemed uber-expensive at the time but 6 months on you'd have to prise them from my cold dead hands. I guess I decided to register now so I could contribute something other than price concerns.

Welcome and I look very much forward to reading your contributions, especially with the HD800/IE800 and the AK120......

I have very similar views to you and think the fun of this hobby firmly lies on the sonics and also whether we hear things similarly or differently and the reasons why?
