Oh, I'm just trying to get the most out of the IEM's. I'm not by any means stuck on that rule, just want to get the most out of them.

Then I'd worry more about the DAP quality than the choice of resistors used to prevent shorts at the output ;)

I'm happy with the AK100 mk2 and did consider getting the RedWine mod but even with it's 3.5ohm output the change to the frequency response is minor.  Some may even prefer it as it drops the presence region by 2dB.

You using that straight out to the Shure SE846? Is it worth the premium over the Fiio X3 / Fiio X5?

No idea.

It's nice on the big rig in my signature too ;)  I considered replacing it all with the AK100 but I'd need a fancy cable system to not blow out my powered monitors every time I plugged them into the AK100.  Balanced input don't much like being shorted while inserting the plug into the AK100.  Get a lovely 117dB kick in the head doing it that way :O  Granted if I sold the big rig I could probably swing that cable and a long vacation but... meh.

What about custom cables and SE846? Did anyone try a full silver cable? What are the benefits? Is it like switching to the white filter?lol

No for real, I'm considering buying one, not sure if 30OCC 25.5awg or 40acc 24awg, any recommendations?

I switched to an effect audio Thor silver cable ($189) and asided from the fact that it's more comfortable and nicer looking,I have also noticed greater clarity and control, particularly for the bass. I'm not a huge believer in cables, but I actually thought this cable improved the sound quality quite significantly

I also use custom OCC silver cables from Headohone Lounge. I would never say silver makes the sound brighter because I believe it improves the clarity of the entire spectrum which leads some to believe it is brighter. Also, my cables are far more comfortable than the stock cables.

Guys I just got my JDS Labs C5D DAC/Amp today.  Tried SE846 with it, and it's a very clear sounding source if you are into that.  It's a bit brighter than I was expecting, but I highly recommend it if you like that kind of sound.  :L3000:

This DAC/Amp needs more exposure.  Here is the link to the discussion thread

I actually, it's lacking bass.  I'm not liking the bass boost, it sounds unnatural.  :(  Bass is tight though, but I'm not a big fan of tight bass, I like varieties of bass, not just tight burst.  If you like tight bass, this is for you.

I think It might be because the USB is not getting enough power so I tried the back where I believe provide more power.  I think it's fuller now.  :L3000:  Sorry for the constant rant, just needed to correct myself.

I also just ordered from Ted. He was very patient with me and answered all my question, great guy!

I ordered a 30 OCC instead of the 40 OCC, Ted believes that it won't change as long as the cable lenght is under 5'.

Mine will be 47". Can't wait to try it

what plug did you take?

Yes, Ted really is great to deal with and his prices are great.

For my SE846 I have an RSA/Kobiconn balanced plug to enjoy the balanced sound from my RSA Lightning amp. For my interconnects I use two Oyaide plugs.

You?

I wanted a single ended 90 degree plug, since I dont know the differences he sent me a picture of all of them. I chose this one:

But maybe I'll mail im for this one, looks smaller...

Do you know the differences? Didn't wanted to bother Ted with more questions :)

How is your Amp? Do you have a balanced source also? How different is the 846 ins balanced  mode?

thanks
