Centrance Hifi-M8 and Hifi-M8 LX (8 versions!) impressions thread - Page 53

My first thought was that you were listening at a higher volume than I do.  The impedance in ohms is pretty close between the Westone and the Heir.  The gain or volume is higher than I use.  So, it might be the output of your source or the level of the recording you are listening to.  Without knowing these variables first hand I am not sure if you listen at a higher level than I do or not.  Intuitively, the higher the level of the volume pot the greater the possibility of amplifying noise or hiss.  (Please protect your hearing.)

My bad, I failed to state the pot level. I usually keep it between 0900-1000. The hiss is pretty subtle.

Oh OK.  That isn't too far off from 1 or 2 o'clock on gain 1.  Haha.

I am using my computer via USB as my source, so the volume should match anyone else using a computer as a source unless they are changing the volume digitally.

And to be clear, I haven't experienced a perfectly black background yet with an amp and IEMs.

another sample which I'll try to confirm later today:

with my M8 and Shure SE215 and Westone U3MX, I didn't hear any hiss at all until well past 1 oclock on the M8 pot.

and cranked up full bore, still barely heard anything.  maybe only the slightest.

this was with M8 on, AC adapter in, USB cabled plugged into iPhone 4S. no audio playing. quiet bedroom, etc.

I'll try to test U3MX on my DACmini later today also.  that is completely dead black with my full HD600 and HE-500.

caveat:  ears are 45+ years old and been to more than a few loud concerts, up front, in the madness.  ::basshead:

Ha! from mid 1990's to early 2000's I attended many live shows, all of them were Heavy Metal shows. All general admission type with no seating arrangements (yeah, you could always find me close to the pit!). Damn, good times! but definitely loud as ****!!!

I must say, by far, Iron Maiden has to be the loudest band in the ******* world!

Impression of ipod touch 5G.

I am quite pleasantly surprised by the sound quality of this little unit as a stand alone player.

Lets see how it fares vs ipod touch 4G coupled with the hifi-M8.

(I know its all meant to be zeroes and ones, but my ears have a different opinion).

____________________________________________________

Hifi-M8 . impedance at 2ohm, gain at lowest.

headphones ATH-ESW11.

*via Flacplayer app.

ipod touch 4G

Sound is in either cup, or centralized.

Slightly `dull edged` sound.

Details seem lost by low end.

ipod touch 5G

The sound is moving around, almost breathing.

Much more separation.

More richer and dynamic.

More audible micro details.

Snappier bass.

Hifi-m8 at gain mid.

extra notes.

The quality of the audio is very similar, but the way it is presented is very different.

ipod touch 5G as winner. Is it the lightning out?, the extra RAM, OS7 or the more powerful A5 chip?

My ATH-ESW11 seems surprisingly lifeless via the touch 4G (I was about to sell them).

*I may run my iphone4 against the ipod touch 5G (same RAM different chip:A4 vs A5 and different connector).

is it a bird, a chip or a cable?

iphone 4 is sounding very much the same as ipod touch4g (coupled with the hifi-m8).

Note: Whencompared to ipod touch 5G(with hifi-m8).

Dull lower end, even woolly-ish.

Congested in a way. less detail.

I tried three usb-lods with similar results.

Centrance, Qusp piccolino and Apple stock.

Winner still...imho...ipod touch5G with the Hifi-M8 connected via Venturecraft lightning cable.

I received my HiFiM8 today, and am finally giving it a listen 7 months after ordering...it was worth the wait!  So far, I've tried 2 configurations:

1)  USB out of my MacBook Pro, which is SSD equipped, using iTunes via BitPerfect

2)  iPod Classic, hooked up the "normal" way.

I'm not sure how much of it is the USB implementation on the M8 and how much is the difference between iPod Classic and the computer, but the iPod version sounds a *lot* better than via USB.  In comparison to the awesome, clean, powerful, detailed sound that makes my LCD 3's sing when the M8 is hooked up to the iPod, the USB connection to my computer sounds muffled and lacking in power with the same headphones - requiring volume to be at maximum to hear anything (with the iPod connection, my volume is below half).

So...while I'm not quite satisfied with the USB performance at this point, I am absolutely loving the iPod performance.  And that's fine with me, since the purpose of this amp/dac is to use it with my iDevices - I have the Woo to use with my Wavelength USB DAC for computer use.  But I am intrigued by this difference.

Has anybody else noticed this difference?  I've read the last few pages of this thread and not seen much actual talk about the sound of the M8...

I'll keep experimenting with headphones and different computers and iDevices to see if this is maybe an issue of my laptop just having crappy audio output.

My M8 sounds fantastic out of my computer and my Android phone via USB.  I have only tested briefly with iDevices, but I did not notice a difference in sound.  Certainly not like you have.

My M8 shall be arriving on Monday. I am beginning to regret not having purchased overnight shipping; the anticipation is too great.

I can't say anything specifically in regards to the M8, as mine hasn't arrived yet. But...it sounds as if something in your setup must be amiss. Or possibly the M8 is somehow defective? The USB section should be equal in quality or better than the i-device input. I would be contacting Centrance if it wasn't.

I don't remember overnight shipping being offered when I pre-ordered. Otherwise I would have chosen that.
When I received my tracking on Thursday, I was really excited! Until I tracked it and found delivery wouldn't be until Wednesday! Ugh! Lol. Torture!
