Spring Toronto Meet - Saturday May 04, 2013 Impressions - Page 6

Has anyone considered a summer meet in someone's backyard?

You could run multiple extension cords from the same house.  You would likely need some portable tables also.

A sunny day would be essential.... and a barbeque of course !

Just a thought. happy_face1.gif

Who provides the beer?

Seriously, one thing that concerns me, and this is an open question to everyone.....what if it rains?

Chris,

I appreciate the offer, but most of the people who read this thread have probably already pitched-in.

I started off saying I would foot the whole bill, so anyone who did contribute just made this cost lower.

It was my decision to try to force this last meet to happen and I think it was an interesting experiment.

Moving forwards we can try other things so we don't make the same mistakes I did.

There is a lot you can do with a year to prepare.

I didn't have the time (especially from Guelph) to scout around TPL locations, but I am sure there is a location that will satisfy both drivers and people taking public transit.

A lot of this can actually be done using Google Map's street view which knocked off a bunch of TPL locations I was interested in.

The other option is trying to find Members of the Trade to help out with hotel meeting room fees.

I contacted Sennheiser, Denon, Sony and Yorkville Sound (Beyerdynamic), but Sennheiser just had an event a week before I called and no one else got back to me.

With a year to prepare you also might have luck with companies south of the border.

I know Beyerdynamic went to the New York meet which timing-wise conflicted with us, but with a year's notice you might be able to get them to come up.

Headroom came up to a Hamilton meet a while back, so you might also try Tyl to see if he would be interested.

The key thing with all this might be timing.  If you can avoid major meets in the 'States you will definitely stand a better chance of getting MOTs to come up.

The thing with successful meets in the States seems to be about getting that momentum going.

Toronto meets are still too small to make things interesting for both attendees and MOTs.

Once you have that critical mass, you can keep building meets bigger.

If it means that we start ticketing meets to raise funds, so be it.

I think we need to begin investing in the Toronto headphone audio community.

This is my fault, but we're starting at a position where we are losing money at a meet.

Financially speaking, this last meet was a total failure.  It's easy to brute force a meet to happen.

What we really need is a system where we can make money at a meet.

The first step is finding a venue to make this happen.

I'd personally like to call on all Toronto Headphiles for information on good venues, TPL or otherwise.

I can't believe that Canada's largest city does't have a suitable venue to make this happen.

Little steps, before big steps.

First step, finding a venue.

There are lots, they are just through the roof expensive. Toronto is bad hunting for a small show/event there is just too much going on so you are always in competition with some other interest group for venues.

Look North to Vaughan or West to Mississauga, Burlington, or Oakville. You will find less booked venues and cheaper rates. All are Go accessable.

That venue didn't look half bad. I like an intimate crowd. My Stratus would've fit in nicely.

Im down for Vaughan. Put me down for the next one. Might have my Blue Hawaii built by then. wink.gif

So far, amazing. I am a bad writer, so I have not yet post any impress on any thread.

My HD800 use to preform badly on POP and ROCKs due to the bad recording. Now, with a small added weight to the low end and more detailed mid, everything sound good to me. Now,I do not need to switch between phones for difference genres. But you have to use the Balance output of the amp, the single ended of the HDVD800 is not as good as my RPX-35 with DAC1

If there is an meet happen in summer while I am still in Toronto, I will bring it for audition.

I can't remember whose HD800's I listened to but it changed the course of my HeadFi journey..

Since the meet..

- HD700 - Sold

- HE500 - Sold

Awesome deal on HD800 - Done!!

I'm really enjoying these HP's.  You have seen my Schiit Stack with the Amperex Orange Globes and I'm really quite happy with one decent HP (the vModa M100's are still around for travelling and portable use)

I still have the Q Silk Litz cable incoming and am considering a Woo WA7 but given what I heard at the meet, I'm really liking the setup.  When I don't want to go the tube route and do some causal listening, the Audinst HUD-MX2 is not bad at all with the HD800.

I'm, finding I'm enjoying everything on the HD800 form 256kb iTunes downloads to 24/96 HDTracks stuff.

Anyway, we're working on the next meet and will keep you posted.

Happy Listening!

But Woo WA7 DAC isn't upgradeable wink.gif unless you're only sticking with it as an amp? Mark... you already bit the bullet for the HD 800... Just jump into the deep end and go balanced very_evil_smiley.gif(Ragnarok/Yggdrasil anyone?!?!)

All jokes aside... for the next meet, if we could have it slightly more uptown, I would love to consider dragging the Mojo/Gun stack along to share (Would just die to hear HD 800 balanced!! Someone bring theirs and a balanced cable!). Sadly I don't have a laptop with optical out... anyone wanna bring one to hook up to my stack? (not bringing a full tower, sorry tongue.gif)

I do have a balanced HD800 with HDVD800.
I do have an external usb sound card that can do 32/192 optical out.
I also have a balanced t1.

If it happens in downtown, I believe I can bring them

I would definitely love the chance to compare HDVD800 to Gung/Mojo combo.

Haha yeah I remember you trying to say how much you loved the HD700s until everyone urged you to try the HD800s. My head-fi journey changed quite a bit too, picked up the Schiit Lyr and Bifrost, and now close to pulling the trigger on a HE-500 or LCD-2.

With a small time between HE500 and LCD2, I think LCD2 put more smell on my face. Maybe it is due to the fact I tried the HE500 on their own amp (HM-5 or something last gem tube amp made by hifiman), it is way to warm and the bass is way too loss. Everything is very very fuzzy.

For build quality, LCD2 is better cause the wood, I think, you need to take more care, but it looks very very nice~~~~

I just picked up the HE500 last week, and I can say for sure: it is NOT fuzzy at all. coming from the HD650, the HE500s clear, crystal clear, honestly the closest I can get to my dream HD800 sound without going over $1k. I tried the AKG K702 Annies, and while it gives that similar analytical sound, it just doesn't have the weight, felt very dry in a side by side comparison.

Next step: LCD-2!~ not for a long while......
