OTOH, OTG USB has far more potential for outboard DAC selection.

Uh Huh. Maybe in the sense that DIN connectors will be around forever or 640K ought to be enough for anybodywink_face.gif

Hey, I keep to a strict 640k data footprint. All of my mp3s are encoded at a bitrate of 2.

After a few days with the X3 I know what I want should I decide to go for the X5 - better firmware/OS

X3 will keep improve firmware, X5 may need a totally new OS

Not necessary.

Anyway, X3 is their first experience, of course they will use this experience to make a better UI in the new coming X5.

I have some concerns about X5 however, I asked James in this thread but I think he didn't see it, which is completely normal, they are working like mad to make X3 perfect. I totally understand the decision.

Then again, I feel like repeating my questions,

Will we have true gapless playback regardless of file type or play mode? In my case I use mostly FLAC and I always use folder view to play my files.

How about the battery life? Will it be longer than X3 or shorter? As long as it is not shorter I have no problems.

Will there be buttons or touchscreen or both or touchwheel like iPod classic? I always hated touchscreen so physical buttons for the win for me and I know many people thinks like me.

With the speed with which the X3 firmware improves, i'd say it's hard to say if the X5 needs other firmware (GUI wise)
As none of us yet knows what the hardware will be that the X5 will use, it could be incompatible with X3(modded) firmware.

AFAIK James had said that they already knew who would be developing the X5 FW, so i think we'll just have to wait at this point.

I think your questions might be unanswerable at this stage. Not that James doesn't want to answer it, but he probably don't want to promise anything he can't be 100% certain of, especially considering that it is still in R&D stage and might not have any stable firmware to run on.

There is GUI and there is firmware. Remember that GUI is only a part of the firmware - firmware and features are dictated / restricted by the SoC's coding (like BIOS to PC). If FiiO still uses the same SoC, then we should expect more or less an improvement rather than a totally new firmware. The GUI on the other hand might be better, but remember beauty is only skin deep. What matters is the actual code underneath the GUI.

Just 4 more months, hopefully less. We did wait for over 2 years for the X3, didn't we? biggrin.gif

The time that it will be release in Eu will be a bit later than that I think, but you are right, we can wait for it totally happy_face1.gif

I just bought a high end ciem (SE5 way) and I want to get rid of my budget sources and buy something at Reference quality. X5 gives me what I need and I have my trust in FiiO.

based on the poll result, seems the majority wants a high end chip on the upcoming x5...

in Hong Kong, you can mod your X3 from 8740 to 8741 for around 100USD....

It seems as though although you ragged on my first post in here that sadly we agree on something entirely.
