As i gave my X3 away before the new 2.x firmware came out, i don't know about the current situation.
The x5 is faster, the UI/UX feels better, battery lasts longer, sound quality is better, more neutral, 256GB+ space vs 136GB space.

OTG support

I'd say it's worth it.

I have both models, the X3 since Nov last year and I was part of the preview tour of the X5 and now own one. I have tried the X3 with FW 2.1 and 2.14beta, the later improves the SQ a lot. The X3 in my opinion will be a completely different player once the new FW is out (later this month). Now, even with the SQ improvements, the X5 sounds better, IMHO enough to go for the X5, plus you get all the obvious improvements over the X3 ( dual TF slots, better screen...)

I've had the X5 for over a week now and added the E12 a few days in. My HPO is the Shure 1540. I'm blown away, as my best gear up til now has been my Android phone and Klipsch in-ears.

This new awakening of music has spurred me to also purchase a quality home audio system (Marantz and Goldenear gear on order) . I'm wondering if anyone is using the X5 as a music transport (pre-DAC) to feed their home system. Does this work, and what's the ideal way to hook it up, coax out? Thanks

It matters if you can hear hiss on super sensitive, low impedance IEM, otherwise no.

Ah okay. Thanks!

Just found a company that still had the E12 DIY in stock (surprisingly) and ordered one!

If anyone's interested: http://www.playstereo.com/product_info.php?products_id=2422

It's an italian based company, i hope they do really still have it in stock.

You may find that you prefer the X5's DAC to that of the Marantz. If so, then line out will be the way to go.

CH23, I am really pleased with your unpacking tool. So I combined a couple of your above releases to have FW2.0 with:

-original colors

-your new 'album art missing' placeholder

-scroll wheel reversed so display and wheel now in synch

I figure that this is just about perfect (for now ).

The X5 is absolutely, without a doubt far superior to the X3 and worth every penny. I had an X3 and eventually sent it back to Amazon. The X5 is so much better in build, sound quality and performance (software-wise) than its little brother. Do not hesitate to choose the X5 over the X3.

I use coaxial out and it works fine. I can't say whether it's better than line out or not, though.

I hope it is not too presumptuous of me to ask, but would you mind sharing (with the understanding of course that if I install your version and my X5 runs away with my wife after setting fire to my home you are not to blame)?

The current stock background for files without album art isn't offensive...its just a little cheesy for my tastes :D

I got mine on Amazon.com for $250.  Now I'm looking into ordering a top quality op-amp (Muses-1) to maximize sound quality.  Looking to put together a group order from the US, as they can be purchased much cheaper from Japan, but not worth the shipping and processing assistance needed (i.e. fixed cost).  US folks, let me know if you're interested.

Just upgraded my X5 the firmware to v2.0.
I found the Equalizer is not working. Is it a known bug?
Tx!

Actually all that I did was to unpack two of CH23's mods, combine the desirable elements and repack. So your concern should be that CH23 will set your house on fire and run away with your wife.  :-)

Seriously, all kudos to CH23 for this.

Here it is: FW2.0 with the more attractive 'album art missing' placeholder and with the scroll wheel reversed.

You're too generous :).

CH23, please give her my fondest regards and remind her to be home for dinner tonight.

Another quick update I got from TekFX/Miccastore.

X5 is finally back in stock and now they updated their order Page with Bundle options: http://www.miccastore.com/fiio-portable-high-resolution-loseless-music-player-special-bundles-available-p-118.html

where you can add HS stacking kit (for E12) for only $8, or add/purchase E12 in a bundle for $100, as well as adding HS8 silicone skin (red, blue, or yellow) for $3.  They also have an option for 64GB Sandisk microSD for $36.
