The Fiio X5 Thread - Page 560

Just got my X5 yesterday. My impressions will be mostly for the hardware/ergonomics/usability as I suck at describing sound and it's been done countless times already.

-Sound quality is brilliant, rials my Theorem 720 Dac/Amp easily, to my ears. I even found one song where the Fiio X5 revealed OBVIOUS compression artefacts where as the Theorem plays the song fine, so I guess the X5 is more revealing(better detailing?) which is a plus. I've been mostly purchasing 44/16 .wav's from Beatport (98% of listening is EDM), trying to cut down on my mp3's anyway so it's fine.

-Flimsy scroll wheel: check. Seems a bit worse then the first batch received in Canada, from which my local headphone shop took a unit out as a demo, which I tested prior.

-I wish the prev/next buttons were a bit harder to press. I've hit them by accident in my pocket when I was trying to feel for the play/pause button very lightly. I'm sure I'll get used to it, but if those buttons get significantly easier to press with wear and tear, the unit will become un-pocketable/unusable for me. Thankfully, the local headphone shop here can do warranty replacements in-store for Fiio, provided there is stock. He orders 25 units at a time and there's a waiting list. They are usually gone within a week lol.

-The unit aesthetics are brilliant as expected. Brilliant paint job, albeit chips a bit easily near the microsd slots (as per the store's demo model).

-On FW 2.0, it powers on a 2.5" Sata SSD as the light is on, on the Sata to USB adapter (see pic below). Can't read it regardless if formatted in NTFS/FAT32/FAT/exFAT and regardless if songs are on the root or not. Will probably require a few more firmware upgrades for it to work. 1TB SSD is possible (Crucial 1TB SSD goes for $475 sometimes, not bad)

-Had two hangs on FW 2.0, not 100% stable. Was playing a .flac file and fast forwarding on first crash, second one happened while the device was in my pocket, playing.

Overall the unit is 9.5/10 based on my expectations. I did a lot of research prior to purchasing so I knew about most of the issues. The only reason I deducted .5 points is the easy-to-press forward/back buttons. I could probably replace the microswitches myself but the unit looks hard to open. I'm not seeing any screws.

With Fiio working on OTG storage support through FW, I will soon be purchasing the upcoming Patriot 1TB USB stick and sticking it to the back of the device. Max flash storage in the future should be 1.5TB (1TB OTG + 2x 256GB cards). For some reason amazon.ca (I'm on Canada) sells the Sandisk 128GB MicroSD for $200 where as on amazon.com sells for $120 so I just went with a cheap 64GB Kingston class 10 for now. Works fine.

While I would not personally use HDD storage with my X5, the possibility of 2TB 2.5" 5400RPm drives is there, as they don't require external power. I assume that would have a great effect on battery life as HDD's are not as power efficient as SSD's/usb sticks.

I find Amazon.ca is over-priced on almost all memory cards. You can usually find better deals at ncix or memory express. (Couldn't even find a listing on amazon.ca for the 128gb card)

I was interested in seeing how those usb - msata adapters would work. I've seen 256gb models listed for around $160 usd. Seems like a cost efficient and portable way to go. Also tiger direct as a good deal on full size 256gb cards (PNY) if a person wanted to use an adapter.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem like Fiio will be able to offer otg support for the X3, so its kinda moot for me

For anybody who is interested, I just got an update from TekFX guys that Miccastore.com should have X5 back in stock by the end of the day today.  The same with all the accessories, should be in stock in a day or so.

I'm unable to find 128Gb microSD cards at any known retailer in Canada.

Amazon.com do delivers to Canada, they however charge for shipping and customs putting the 128 microSD at approximately $150.

I'm not in that much of a hurry to buy a 128Gb microSD. For now I use 64+32 microSD and can always use my old 32Gb USB drive with the OTG cable.

Sandisk mentioned 128GB microSD is not going to be available in Amazon.ca until June.

I did have a pre-order in with Amazon, but cancelled it. Honestly I was expecting to get an email saying that they wouldn't even ship to us dirty Canadians (most things I put in my cart get that msg.). I imaging that by Christmas time Samsung/Kingston/et.al will have cards out much cheaper. In the mean time if I really need more space I could grab one of those 256gb PNY cards + a microsd to sd adapter for round the same $150 (still hoping tho that Fiio will make otg work for us X3 folks)

Hello,

Is there a FiiO X5 owners thread, I recieved my X5 today and couldn't wait to try it after coming back from work and guess what it did not disappoint me. Absolutely fantastic sound, it drives my logitech UE 9000 effortlessly, I have to try the other headhpones. First thing I did was to upgrade the firmware to 2.0. then I tried few different resolution and bit rate tracks to see how they go. And, that's where I got the shock.

It did not play my Goldberg Acoustical from AIX records. below are the file properties  from foobar2000. It is 2.5 GB file.

Duration : 52:14.822 (300 942 873 samples)
Sample rate : 96000 Hz
Channels : 6 ( in VLC it says channel - 3F2R/LFE)
Bits per sample : 24
Bitrate : 7153 kbps
Codec : FLAC
Encoding : lossless
Tool : reference libFLAC 1.2.1 20070917
Embedded cuesheet : no
Audio MD5 : EC504861A2B0C31E1AF3128E56293747

I guess the issue is that the file is 6 channel audio but there is nothing in FiiO documenation that it cannot decode 6 channel audio or won't play 5.1 encoded files. It is clearly not dolby or DTS encoded.

Can anyone from FiiO shed light on it?

EDIT : I downmixed the file to 2 channel, it came dwon from 2.5gb to 1.6gb. Now it is playable in X5. I never thought that it won't be able to play more than two channel files.

Okay. so my HS6 pitched up, and - all is good...

...and NOW you guys are mentioning a double case, haha, I'll be bankrupt soon - but enjoying the tunes ;o)

Scorpion667 - I'll try my brand new 128GB Sandisk Ultra SSD (in a cheap 'Dynamode' USB2 housing - fits perfectly in my now defunct E12 velour case!!) and report back, with the quirk with the SD card, could be that some work, some don't...

For those who stated the X5 does not start with the last song played after a power cycle, mine does and with no issues. I have it set to song instead of song position. (I'm not even certain song position is an option on the X5 as it is on the X3) But mine starts playing the last song played when it powers up. I am playing all songs randomly as I prefer and the X5 is sounding better every hour.

My X5 remembers the song and position on start up, just select it in the settings.

mine does work sometimes, and other times it won't. not sure why, but i think it's more me-related than FiiO X5 related....

Mine does exactly what I want it to and I am not surprised as I chose the setting I wanted.

I'm just saying for those who don't think it works, it does if you have it selected in settings.

Does anyone know if it's possible to have USB drivers for both the X3 and the X5 on the same PC?

I have an X3 and wanted to compare it to an X5 but when I installed the X5 usb driver into my computer it seems to have uninstalled the x3 driver!

Do you think this would work to add another 256 GB via OTG USD:

http://m.tigerdirect.com/products/8967119?cm_mmc=EML-_-Main-_-MBWBBP1899-_-tigeremail1899&SRCCODE=MBWBBP1899&utm_source=EML&utm_medium=main&utm_campaign=MBWBBP1899

It is very reasonably priced for the amount of storage it offers.
