G'day

Rechecked "everything" and convinced cards are not genuine - they're certainly faulty in places. Rechecked "everything" again on Windows based machine (this one is Linux) and have arrived at same conclusion.

First suspicion (tell-tale sign) of faulty card was the progressive slowing of copying progress. Duplicated everything with different card readers / adapters etc to eliminate as much as possible before placing cards beneath magnifying glass.

As I type this (having driven across town to steal a 64Gb card out of my partner's Galaxy Note tablet) I am yet again copying files and will report upon the progress or lack thereof.

Checked path lengths, largest / longest was 253 characters - since shortened

Thanks

Thanks.  There are some .bin files in the folder.  What do they have to do with the X5 firmware?

I have no idea why FIIO put those .bin files in the archive but you can safely ignore them. Only x5.fw is needed which is the real firmware.

They(the previously mentioned ebay seller) seem to have the leather case, too, sweet!

This one has the dual layer hard case:

Has anybody dealt with them before? Are they reliable? They seem to be based in Singapore...

Definitely a fake card -- the progressively slowing copying is a giveaway.

It is a pre-order only... No real stock.

Finally got my final impressions uploaded on the X5. Many thanks to the happy go lucky crew at Fiio for providing this review unit and for allowing me on the tour.

For anyone seeking more information, stay tuned. Me and Bowei Zhao of Panda Tech review will be doing a more informative written review for audio360.org.

Yep - the first few GBs seems fine. I dragged the cards out under good light with a magnifying glass to check serial numbers and they are the same. All sandisk products have unique serial numbers. Hence my drive across town for a known authentic unit. These cards are made in Taiwan, the packing made in China - should've looked at all of this prior to use and saved myself a heap of trouble.

With the new card, I simply dragged and dropped a folder containing about 60s CDs in FLAC to the microSD. Progress started at about 9MB/sec and never dropped below 7MB/sec. With the new card inserted into the X5 the media update was crisp and brisk and now working flawlessly but....I'm still sussin' it all out...and burning in with Valerie June's "Pushin' Against A Stone" - simply stunning - even with these Iphone ear-buds. UE900s en-route :-)

A very very big thank-you to everyone here who has so graciously offered advice and assistance

muchas gracias :-)

Got the x5 yest, impressed tho it is too similar sounding to dx90 which is 50 hours ahead burn in time.
One question and sorry, must have been asked before for sure..
Hate the lock options..not clever at all Fiio, would rather normal play rw etc buttons.
So..you hold the volume with the hope to change the volume and it changes tracks..and no option to change that..hmmm..
And thats not all by far..then u realize u cant ff and rw in lock screen mode..whaat????
Please correct me if wrong here, still new to the x5, other wise love the sound and rest of the experience.

If sensibly heavier than dx90,thats due to the so far better battery life, but stay tuned later for impressions b/n zx1 and dx90 x5..

I was checking in on the X3 thread and quite a few people are commenting on a big improvement in sound with the new beta software. I'm curious if Fiio is planning a sound improvement with FW2.0 on the X5.

For my portable rig I'm using a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 > Fiio E18 > V-Moda M-100's. It's a lot of hassle carrying all that and I'd like to free my phone.

How does the X5 compare sonically?

Does it play well with OSX?

Is the X5 powerful enough to drive my other headphones (specifically my HD 650's & Q701's)?

Would my E18 be of use any more?

Does the X5 allow navigation via folder structure?

Thanks for taking the time.

Is no one able to answer any of my questions? I'll buy the X5 in a heartbeat if anyone can tell me it'll sound better than my GN3/E18 rig.

I'm thinking about getting the E12 + HS6 kit, but i want to know if it's really that big a difference. I listen exclusively with Grado GR10 IEMs and Grado PS1000's.

BTW, While comments here are great to read I would guess that the bugs and enhancement requests in Bugzilla are the ones that get consideration for future firmware releases, so please sign up and use this tool to give Fiio your feedback..

I'm surprised noone else voted on this?

It certainly does folder structure, I don't portable amp so cant answer your others. Be very surprised if it isn't better though as the source is top notch. Plugged into hifi and its superb.
