Crossing my fingers for a playlist feature. Or at least the option to favorite whole albums.

Several pages dominated by mp3 vs lossless vs 24bit discussion

Well, I'm afraid I have to keep my opinion to myself biggrin.gif

But I'll note that the X5 has featured an industry-leading 32bit floating point mp3 decoding section since firmware version 1.21 which has been acknowledged by leading critic Marlene to be able to sqeeze every drop of audio quality out of mp3s (did you even know that mp3s could have 32 bits of resolution?).

So no, it should not be "easy" to discern between FLAC and mp3 on an X5, if only because the mp3 playback has also improved biggrin.gif

You may download the testing data Marlene posted here:

This was done on preproduction firmware which had the quiet FLAC playback bug so you'd notice that the dynamic range from FLAC was even slightly less than that of mp3 biggrin.gif Of course this is not the case now with FW1.23.

That's great news :) most of my music is in 320Kbps mp3 files.

Actually, I don't see the fuss about the formats as long the music is recorded correctly in the first place. If the music is recorded poorly (e.g. using a phone to record a live concert; did that but for an academic conference on anime/manga), no matter how good the format is, the music won't sound good.

'kay, back to the X5.

I suspect you are referring to the recording, mixing and mastering of the original music source?

Yes - but I'm not derailing this thread any further than it has been already.

I am in no way saying there is no point to high quality playback DAP like the X5 and DX90. They DO make the music sound leaps and bounds better than my iPhone. I just don't believe the reasoning is due to their ability to playback FLAC or .wav files. IMO, it is to do with their incredible DACs and amps and other high quality parts. I own a DX90 myself and will be listening to the X5 this weekend.

Is there a maximum album artwork size or something? I went through and added album art to a ton of my FLAC files and they don't show up on the X5. The only thing I can think of is I was using larger album art sizes (1425x1425)... I will have to go back down to 500x500 - unless there is a better resolution for X5?

Also any word on Firmware 2.0, is there somewhere we can read about what is going to be changed or updated?

One more question: any word on the X5 accessories and anywhere I can buy them in the US yet?

Thanks everyone! Keep rockin.

1000x1000 seems to work for me.

Yeah it looks like 1000x1000 may be the maximum. I resized all the ones not working to 500x500 and they work.. the ones that didn't work were a little over 1000x1000

I'm only 1900 posts behind in this thread. Am I missing anything?

Observation: The X5 sounds just great as a USB DAC + amp fed from my Surface Pro 2 and Foobar. Actually I think it sounds better than as a DAP. Maybe a fair bit better. I do have the substantial improvement of the Foobar crossed plugin but I am not sure that this can explain the extent of the perceived improvement.

Any updates on accessories or 2.0 firmware

A friend gave me some DSD to try but they wont play. They are .dsf but got a feeling I read here that X5 plays .dff with the latest beta s/w.  Any idea if I can convert or what the difference is? Will X5 ever play .dsf?  Really out of curiosity just to give them a go.

What about the file size? I have no problems displaying even 1800x1800 covers, provided the file size isn't too big, I try to keep them under 1mb. There was one instance where the cover failed to show up for me and it was when I was using a 2.5mb png. I converted it to jpeg and the problem was gone.

Ah interesting, perhaps it is filesize - I will do more testing later on and try to find out what the deal is
