The Fiio X5 Thread - Page 490

Now that we've agreed that no one on this thread has any knowledge of how audio reproduction works or how audio electronics works maybe we can get back to discussing the X5?

Please list all headphones you have tried with the X5 and which one is all-around best.

I really enjoy my Shure SE846's with the X5 alone, I feel like the bass has much greater impact and the music overall has better clarity and a wider soundstage than the iPhone 5 which I was driving them with prior to the X5.

My favorite combo though has been my LCD-2.2's with the X5/E12 bundle, that particular combo rivals my desktop setup and though the LCD-2's aren't exactly portable headphones but the sound is exemplary.

I also have a pair of Mr. Speakers Alpha Dog's on order, haven't heard any comments yet on how well that pairs with it but I will know in a few weeks when I get mine.

No, i mean there are threads there talking about this issue with links to studies proving that we can't hear the difference. Real, rigorously conducted studies, double blind tests, etc. Tons of research all saying the same thing..our ears can't hear the difference. There was a recent study in fact where audiophiles couldn't pick out the lossless wav file from the compressed 160kb mp3s. They even were testing the audiophiles with their OWN files and they couldn't pick out the lossless ones.

I'd post the links to many studies but the mods don't like that stuff outside of the sound science forum.

Don't understand what this comment has to do with the X5?

Does that mean X5 sounds better in your opinion?

I'm picking up my X5 tomorrow so would love confirmation that I'm making the right decision. :)

Does anybody else have a pop at the end of a DSF song when it switchs tracks? I does it with gapless on or off.

I get that (a click, rather than a pop) on some gapless ALAC tracks.  Maybe a zero-crossing problem?

For my files, I notice a small click when the track changes from DSF to PCM, but not when changing from DSF to DSF.

The click is not noticeable enough to disturb listening though.

Don't understand what this comment has to do with the X5?

It all started snowballing because of my initial question.

Basically I was trying to figure out if it would be relatively easier to discern between flac and mp3 on an X5 than a ALAC and mp3 on a 6G iPod classic for example. I wasn't trying to derail

uli87 - rather than derailing any further .....

  1. It won't really make any difference on either device
  2. As far as knowing if you can discern a difference:
[a] Suggest you ignore what everyone says (both sides) .... and ......
[b] Test yourself - the software is free, and then you know what you can hear - this link explains everything ..... http://www.head-fi.org/t/655879/setting-up-an-abx-test-simple-guide-to-ripping-tagging-transcoding

If you test yourself - then you know your own limits.  I can promise you that it is an eye opener and really worth the time to do it.

Once you've done the tests yourself - then the best thing to do is stay out of the debates.  it only leads to what is currently happening on this thread (derailing and general derision)

Thanks I will read up on that. Just wanted to know because I want to get my microsd cards ready and v0 or 320 Kbps take up less space and much more abundant online.

The real secret to music quality is in the mastering of the original - not the container (in my experience)

I love the LCD-2 rev2 and X5/e12 combo. Very nice sounding! I also like the Vmoda m-100, though I need to EQ the bass down by about -5db. This is a fun listen and the bass is still very present and quick. I'm not a fan of the AKG K-550 with the X5. The sound to me seems fake, not natural. I did however like them on the X3.

I'm strongly considering picking up the Oppo PM-1 to pair with the X5. Should be pretty sweet sounding.
