Though we may not agree with him, we don't have to bash him for his opinion. He's entitled to his own (poor) views and he shouldn't be called out as a troll. At least not yet. For all we know he may consider something like the Clearaudio Statement turntable "decent." And there's nothing wrong with saying the X5 should be better than the X3 to succeed. It's supposed to be.

Edit: ^^^I darn well expect the X3 to sound better than the X5!

I was very surprised that you mention X3 has poor sound quality.

I believe you make this relative comparison to Ivy League DAPs (DX100, HDP-R10, AK120 & HM-901).

About X5, many head-fiers including me put very high expectation on X5 to have sound quality on par with those DAPs in Ivy League but still not sure how it will sound.

However some head-fiers have already confirmed that in term of sound quality the X3 ($200) is quite on par with AK100 ($700) which is 3.5 times more expensive.

May be you should try them out and come back to tell us what do you think about X3 again.L3000.gif

I have knocked X3 on various aspects but sound is never one of that.  Simply put X3 is at least on par, if not better, than AK100 though having different sound signatures.  AK100 would also fare better when paired with an amp but standalone I don't think anyone can find a better sound within a range of TWICE it's msrp.

I respect everyone's right to their own opinion.  But making sweeping generic statement without any context nor details is trolling, unintentional trolling at best.

thinking of it, we spend 1000's of our hard-earned sobs to get back to the sound we enjoyed before the rise of mp3's, you even have to do about 50 more task to get music onto your DAP... that's progress.

Well thats kind of why I keep the MD players around (That and the fact that the sport MD gets 40 hours playtime on a single AA). I just brought the Palm out again for S&G as I was remembering how good it can sound with TCPMP and had never used FLAC files on it. It still is the ONLY player I ever owned which made MP3's sound palatable. Theres a guy out there with a hact to let it read SDHD cards so I might try that, but as it stands having to choose 1 gig of music is rather fun.

I picked an AKAI 702d deck out of the garbage a while ago and it works a charm.

I agree with you partially, bcos today I tried pairing x3 and ak100 with portable amp ORB jade to go using w4r and fidelio s2... I have found that x3 has immdediate improvement on SQ... Sorry not good at describing sound but I immediately felt the music was more lively and with good solid bass... Tested using hdtracks 24/192 flac

Keep in mind that this is a bit like some hearing one amp and another and not hearing a difference whilst others can easily tell each amp apart blinded.

The differences are already hard to hear on units like such as they don't have any technical deficiencies(distortion, noise, clicks) that are the things that make for the easiest to tell are bad(and easy to fix). Past that baseline level, stuff gets harder and harder to hear.

But of course, a lot of this is price justification and the law of diminishing returns.

And then there is build quality. I have seen reports saying the A&K DAPs have very high build quality, but that the X3 looks good on photos, but isn't as nice in the hand as it looks.

Lars, have you seen the E12? The build quality on that easily matches, maybe even surpasses the AK100 in build quality.

I have the E12, will be getting the X3 next week. Never felt the AK100. But whilst the E12 looked and felt smooth. The AK100 looks much more smooth and well creased. There are some rough spots on the E12 where the edges and screw holes are. The metal is smooth for the most

Wow - panda's are sure discerning! wink.gif

Seriously, to me the E12 looks about as well built as I could hope for (certainly better built than the C&C BH, not that I have any complaints about it's build).

I'm actually surprised by AK100(in a good way). I had a chance to demo them again today, and my impressions were very good. Very very solid build, tiny size, responsive(for a dap), and it seemed to work fine with my iems(despite some impedance issues).
