Thanks for the support!

I'd upgrade your IEM first though.

I have to agree on upgrading your IEMs. Then again there is nothing wrong with upgrading your sources and then your IEMs/headphones afterward. But honestly youd yield bigger results from upgrading your IEMs first.

The bottleneck is probably in the headphones. That said, u should be able to enjoy the bigger soundstage of X5 with them.

The NAD50 headphones sound pretty amazing in the sub $900 headphone catagory. If you haven't heard them, don't knock em.

I won't comment on the X3 vs X5 as I haven't heard either. However I plan to get the X5 to go with my PSB headphones, which are similar to the NADs.

The fiio e9 is a good amp. I have never combined it with the e17 or e7 . However I have used the e9 to run my dt 880 600 oms quite efficiently.

Source, Source and once again Source. What you put in is what you get out. Of course the components down the line are equally important but if your source is lo res then what you get out is lo res. I have the NAD hp 50 myself and they are an amazing set of 'phones. I can easily tell the difference between an Mp3, lossless and hi res lossless with them. (running an ipod touch with the onkyo HF app- great app btw, better than FLAC player-; thru sony pha-1 DAC). I do'nt have the x3 so I can't comment on that, but given that you have a good player in the x3 the difference in audio quality with the x5 would be perceived better I suppose if your source files are of high quality. The NAD's are musical instruments imho. No need for an upgrade there.

Ok, I have not heard the NAD, hope I have not misleaded. My experience was when I tried the X5 with W4R, I was underwhelmed, however when I tried the 846 with the X5, I found it's really a high quality DAP, much better than X3 and better than AK100. So I guess the SE215 is not worthy of the upgrade.

I think X5 excels in squeezing out every bit of detail in your recordings and therefore best to pair with very revealing iems.

When comparing with X3, the X5 is tuned more neutral (less warm) in comparisons. Hence, you get better clarity and better instrument separation.

Sorry to go over things that have already been discussed in the Preview Tour thread, but I just want to clarify 100% what the deal is with the file limit on the X5.

If I've read the relating posts correctly, the X5 is limited to 7000 files, it is a hardware issue that can not be resolved by any firmware upgrade (would that also be the case with any possible Rockbox dev?), and the only way the problem can be resolved is for Fiio to effectively release a "mark 2" player?

Is that definitely the case?

If so, that's a real shame and would no doubt put off a lot of potential customers. It seems silly to use ever increasing memory capability as a major sales pitch if the player is limited to the number of files it would recognise.

DAPs have been around for years now and it's about time developers started to realise and acknowledge that a lot of people have huge music libraries that they want direct access to on the go.

I've currently got around 18000 files in a mixture of formats and bit-rates, and the X5 was looking like the player for me (having maxed out my 160gig Cowon X7 ages ago), but now with this file limit problem it's looking like the iBasso DX50 is my only possible option.

There is no limit if you organize by folders and browse through file view, which is the only way I would use the X5.

I would organise the same way, but what happens when you put the whole player on shuffle? Would it only recognise 7000 of however many files you have?

I think it shuffles the current folder you are inside (if you are using folder view). In which case you will need 7000 songs inside one folder or more, whatever you want.

However I'm not 100% sure about this. I'm sure more knowledgeable pandas and Joes will show up and let you know in a few hours.

Also, does the X3 support this?

I don't have the time nor patience nor the will to go back through hundreds and thousands of songs and embed the art.  I want to use the same cover.jpg I use now with a Rockboxed iPod, Squeezebox Touch, etc.

Don't think this has been clarified.

Does anybody know whether or not the X5 support cover.jpg cover art?

Ah, right - so what you're saying is that, providing there are no more than 7000 files in each folder (assuming a basic structure of music folder>artist folder>album folder>song), then the file limit, even on shuffle, wouldn't come into play and every single individual song would, in theory, play on shuffle at some point?

Have I understood you correctly?

Cos, if so, thanks, and that makes the X5 my main contender again.

Look forward to confirmation!
