The Fiio X5 Thread - Page 360

Just FYI for anyone who may have spotted the X5 presale (for US) from Adorama.com - I emailed them a few days ago for any ETA info and just heard back today: they have no info and will not be releasing any info, including your place in line. They don't know when they're receiving them or how many. Maybe this is true for all sites and Adorama is just being more careful with dates, but it seems like other sites more geared toward audio equip have a little better idea than that. Basically, if you pre-order you won't hear anything until it ships.

Adorama is good site for camera equip, but perhaps doesn't jive with this hobby as well. Just wanted to let folks know in case they're comparing preorders. Definitely glad I cancelled with them in favour of the better deal at MP4Nation. Crossing fingers the 3/29 date for the first batch holds true :dt880smile:

For a start - unless you actually own an OTL Tube amp, or are planning on getting one - don't get the 600 ohm DT880s - there is no point.  The 250 ohm will be more versatile, and they sound practically the same (yes I've owned both, and yes I got the chance to compare side-by-side).

Second - no, IMO the amplifier section on the X5 copes admirably well with the 250 ohm DT880 - no signs of under-amplification at all.  When I had the trial X5 - I spent a large part of the time paired with the DT880, and also performedvolume matched comparisons with my desktop NFB-12.  You don't need extra amping - unless you were planning on trying to drive something insanely power demanding like an HE6.  The whole point of the X5 is that it's a one-stop stand alone device.

I was planning on getting a OTL Tube amp (shiit valhalla or lyr because ive heard that they pair well with beyer headphones) for the 880 600ohm. For portability however i was thinking that the X5 will need more power to drive the 600ohm 880s. So is the E12 a good option? I understand why it might be unnecessary for 250ohm headphones but how about the 600 ohm?

What is the headphone output impedance on the Valhalla and Lyr? If it's lower than 30 ohms - I'd still stick with the 250 ohm Beyer. Also - the Lyr is actually a hybrid - not an OTL.

Edit : just checked. Lyr is under 1 ohm, and Valhalla is 30 ohm. Both have ideal damping factor for the Beyer DT880 250 ohm. My advice - forget the 600 ohm, forget the E12, just get the X5 and spend the rest of your money on music biggrin.gif

Just another new forum member chiming in to say thanks to all of you guys in the Head-Fi community for this thread (and several others) and for all the helpful information you've all provided.  I've been a lurker here for some time, but figured I'd make an account and say hello and thanks.

Information from threads in the Head-Fi forums have helped me in several purchases in the past year and a half or so (mainly my FiiO E17, Beyerdynamic DT880, and now the FiiO X5.)

In fact, I discovered the thread about the X5 the same week my Rockboxed 120Gb iPod Classic finally died on me.  I pre-ordered the X5 from B&H Photo, but was then convinced to cancel and pre-order from mp4 nation.  I got lucky and got in on the first batch of pre-orders, and am eager to get my hands on this thing.

I really enjoy reading the forums here.  Thanks again, folks, and hello!

I didn't order 2. I just didn't make mp4nation's 1st round of pre-order and am in their 2nd batch of pre-orders. If I ordered 2, I shudder to think what the repercussions would be if/when my wife found out wink.gif.

BTW, there are too many order and we just start delivery to our agents in China, so it will take 1 months to produce the whole batch and delivery to all our agents around the world.

anyway, every one can buy on from local dealer in 30 days if he want.
