The videos or the firmware :)

My X3 How To Videos are popular and my stats are showing me that my fans and viewers want to see that stuff.

The X5 differs from the X3 in many ways, and I find that some fine tips are needed to help people out on what exactly is going on.

As for the firmware being big work. I leave it in your capable hands James :)

Glad to see you are recovering well :gs1000smile:

The FiiO X5's user manual that has been posted by Joe also tells you.

But basically, picture the X5's X button layout.

Upper Left: Favorites/Shortcuts/ Main Menu(if held)

Upper Right: Regular Back Button / Main Menu (if held)

Lower left: Previous Song/ Rewind

Lower Right: Next Song/ Fast Foward

Middle Button: Click, Select, Access

Scroll Wheel: Scrolls for selection.

Let me know if you need more help

Oh perfect, thanks! I feel a bit silly now, for some reason I thought most people didn't know what they were for. Thanks, bowei006!

It's intimidating that is for sure

The X5 is very clean and utilitarian looking. There are no words or labels on the front that is silkscreened unlike the X3.

The first time I saw a picture of the X5, I was  as well.

But the moment you get it in hand, and after 30seconds of playing around with it. You practically know what to do

My entire playlist of videos for the X5 is here:

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwVIrRPoDClo7BGnA99CTJ9eq0v8cfY8L

I like to make videos and use the data I gather for this reason. A lot of people don't want to ask questions they think are dumb.

I have a lot of views and viewership on my videos that answer general audio questions, and also ones on device operations of units, or basic computer file operations in adjunction with audio units.

A lot of people still ask of course, but a lot also want to see a video first.

Only problem is that most don't tell me what it is they want to see, and I have to guess what people want and make it based off that.

Thanks James, that sounds good

Just preordered at HeadRoom. Talked to the guy, he said he's not completely sure but that there might only be about 10 x5's in the first batch. I was within the first 4 to preorder, so people looking to get one out of the first batch at HeadRoom might want to call them soon!

I keep waiting for that awful email saying that the release date is delayed, but they still say April first, so here's hoping. They took my money, they better have something to ship to me when the international release happens! smily_headphones1.gif

Did they 'really' take your money though?

Or did you really just throw gobs of cash at the screen in hopes of the X5 popping up :)

Just sharing my thoughts on the tour of the X5. This is my first time writing a review and i've looked through past reviewers comments and I probably need more experience in reviewing audio gears. Please bear with me for a while.

Hardware
Pros: The X5 is pretty well constructed and feels sturdy. Overall, the construction is very good. It feels premium on the hand. No complains on the accessories as it comes with expectation.
Suggestions: I feel the wheel texture can be made better. Textured layers instead of circular lines may make a user control the wheels better.
The scrolling wheel feels flimsy. When I tap on the wheel, it felt like its not properly secured and a slight noise when 2 metal plates hit.
The USB point opening could be made better to fit a USB shape instead of a standard rectangle cut. I dont usually look at the charging point and often, just plug it in blindly. However, most of the time it doesnt fit in at first try. Imaging charging of my samsung hp.
The 4 buttons outside the wheel seems to confuse me abit. I cant seem to understand what each button does. Perhaps a clearer indication will help.

UI
Pros: The UI is simple and easy to use. Probably user will get the full picture after a few mins with the UI. Its very responsive and probably not much time lag between each console.
Suggestions: To adjust the volume, when the X5 is in sleep mode while playing in background, I have to press the on/off button to wake up, press the vol control button and then the scroll wheel to adjust volume. Total of 3 steps. I feel adjusting vol is one of the most fundamental and necessary and often used by user. I probably wish it can be done in a single move instead of 3.
Some times, the scrolling can be too fast and causing some annoyance to scroll to the right page. Hopefully a function to adjust the sensitivity of the scroll will be good.

Sound
First foremost, I've used a ATH M50, Brainwavz B2 and ATH IM03 during the period.
The first earphone on X5 was the B2. B2 was known for its clarity and flatness and a pretty unexciting IEM. Using the B2 for commute with a samsung phone, it sounded like someone talking instead of singing. However, things took a whole new level when paired with the X5. The presence of bass is there. Engaging and tight. X5 seems to have expanded the soundstage, giving the B2 an engaging presence to the listener. The change is not subtle. Its overwhelming and makes my B2, a $140 + earphone sounded like a $400+ multi BA phone. It caught me by a pleasant surprise. I didnt know with a good DAP, the B2 can sing that well. Overall, I find the paring makes the B2 sounded bright in a good way. Probably I prefer vocals with clarity. I actually listened for a few hours which I couldnt help myself to stop. I just wish to explore all my songs all over again with the X5.

With a similar expectation, I was hoping it will give an even better boost to the IM03 and the M50. Unfortunately, that experience only came with the former. For IM03 and M50, X5 does give it a wider sound stage presence, brighter sounding, and more energy to the music. I was hoping it could bring me to a new level. But the improvement was not as overwhelming as B2.

Overall, I feel the X5 is a pretty capable DAP. I will think its a better DAP than AK 100. If anyone is looking for the AK100, probably can give X5 a demo before committing. I'll give a thumbs up for Fiio's X5.
Regarding volume change in screen off state, u can configure the volume control buttons and back/forward buttons to be active when in screen off state, so instead of taking 3 steps for volume change or to move to next/previous track, u just need one click. FYI

Tommy, I enjoyed your review, great pictures too! What headphones did you try with the X5 and if multiple which was your favorite match?
