Thanks for that. Like the bit about wolfson dacs only being used in top line audiophile stuff. Like Samsung phones?rolleyes.gif

Hope they didn't put the knees out in their trousers doing that review.

If its any consolation to you blokes the "audiophile community" is no different over there. "Whats the most expensive? I'll take it!".

Right! Gives you the easiest bragging right. Show it to your friends and say: "This is the most expensive DAP in the world."

And then they "know" that it is also the "best".

Anyway, the A&K DAPs do look nice and seems to have a nice UI also. How they sound compared to other top quality DAPs costing less is another story.

@ OK-Guy: well, I know some portions of the audiophile community can be crusty dinosaurs who judge the validity of 'HiFi' based primarily on price-tag, but let's just agree not to tar everyone woth the same brush, eh?   As I said, it was never anythin' personal, just a difference of viewpoint. The times, they are a-changin', but there will always be some who resolutely keep their heads in the sand for certain idiosyncratic reasons.

As far as the Hi-fi World 'review' (cough!), I intentionally avoided posting its link because I view it with contempt - I personally very much doubt it is a genuine review; it reads like advertising copy, and I consider it absolutely no coincidence that iRiver / AK  are advertisers on the Hi-Fi World website, whereas iBasso, Hi-FiMan etc., who are so curiously absent from mention in the 'review', are not advertisers there. I cry 'foul' and I'm sticking to it no matter what the publishers claim to the contrary.

I took a quick scan of it, and I agree. It's hard for me to take a review seriously when they don't list the "£1140"  price tag as a negative lol.

+1... and the thread is almost as bad with the demo-blaggers boasting up to 40% better SQ... then you read & this really makes me giggle, is the adding of a amp to make it sound better.... hi-end DAP?, really?

ps... I never took anything as personal... we were arriving at the same spot from different destinations.

Or better yet the can't wait for the RedWine mods. Right so let me get it straight here. You want me to pay over a grand (closer to 1.5 with taxes) for a DAP that A) needs a firmware update before I even get it out of the box and B) Needs to be third party modded and or run through an external amp.

I'll get right on that.

Just to pay some money to Hi-Fi World, you can ask the editor to write anything excellent about your products even they are bad.

I can never trust any review from actual magazine or on-line magazine.

Look at the conclusion, it sounds "rubbish" to me.

CONCLUSION
Like the AK100, the new tuned-up AK120 is a player that shows what we are moving to: it’s a glimpse of the future. Superb high resolution digital sound quality brings even old analogue recordings to life – fabulous. Its improved output amplifiers strengthen bass grunt when using the analogue headphone output to feed a stereo amplifier, making this a serious digital player, not just a fabulous sounding portable.  Hopefully DSD will work well when it arrives as it is attracting interest, but even without it, the AK120 is a must-have.

I apologized for saying that.

Same here. Hi-Fi world probably got paid to write that review.

FiiO could always go one better than the AK120 by implementing a DAC with 'pulse array' technology... http://www.chordelectronics.co.uk/chord-dac-technology.asp   the new 'black'.
