The Fiio X5 Thread - Page 294

It's funny to see people can't accept the X5 is getting no praise. Maybe you should rather be suspicious of those reviewers/sites writing positive about it. Looks to me like they have more to gain than someone who's writing a less good review about it :D

That being said, I didn't see or hear the X5 and I don't plan on it either. So you won't hear me say anything good or bad about it. The X3 kind of disappointed, so I'm not going there again.

It has nothing to do with "accepting the X5 is getting no praise". I didn't pay out of pocket to demo the X5. Yet that had no bearing on me giving it my honest opinion. I honestly didn't expect it to impress me as much as it did. I did pay out of pocket for the RWA AK100 and was very disappointed in such an expensive purchase. I was downright pissed to be honest. I'll give my honest opinion rather I spent money on the unit or not.

Micro detailing just stands out so easily on the X5 it is effortless. While the RWA unit did still very much have a black background, it's dynamic range was quite poor with the presentation being congested and running together. Bass was bloated and an obvious peak in the upper mids and lower treble to my ears.

I think his comments were more towards he 100mk2 sound and I suspect the he just lumped the 100 in along for the ride. He did say the dynamics were better on the X5 but there's no doubt there were contradictions.

He loves the Tera and really liked the sound of the X5 but uses the AK100mk2 (size, screen and sound combo) as his go to portable so that's where his expectations lie. He probably just didn't like the size and therefore didn't get to know it well enough to develop a comfort zone with the UI.

I think you buying an AK120 after your AK100 experience speaks to your open mindedness. We all get enthusiastic and can have strong personal opinions but that's just human.

This demand for so-called intuitive UIs is the dumbing down of electronics in my view. Everything has to be like handing Granny an iPad.

If you own a piece of electronics, you learn how to use it. Function is what matters.

But then, I still use Windows.

I don't mind so much on the UI. To me X3's UI was still acceptable.
Most people nowadays are spoilt by Apple. I'm happier with a decent UI like AK and have more features/functions like bluetooth or wifi than a snappy Apple UI and no extra features.

Maybe but I am still having problems. For some reason when I put the X5 on repeat, the circle, for an album, it works for a while and then it says that the song is not a recognized format and stops playing. It doesn't turn off but won't go any further. Everything is FLAC or WAV. Also when I look at the songs in an album, when I bring it up to play, it shows two of everything. Two 1's, two 2's and so on. I plays in sequence and doesn't play two 1's and so on but it is odd and I am trying to figure it out.

I don't know about you but I could never get it to work with my microSD card I used previously with my DX50. What I ended up doing is to create an microSD card formatted with the X5 format command and then just created a series of directories with songs I used for the evaluation. I also moved my entire library onto my PC, reformatted the card using the X5 format utility and loaded all the songs back onto the card. When doing a scan, I tried with the reformatted card and could not get it to work in library mode but it worked just fine in directory browse mode. So what I did because I wanted to test the library facility is to scan the unit without any cards, then I plugged the evaluation microSD card, scanned it which filled up the library database and added the other card without scanning. This way I had one card with library info and another with browsing info (more songs onto it).

The point I am making is maybe the player does not think your library is clean. Did you do something similar than what I did above?

One more thing, you may want to post your comments in the following thread since you are using the player as an evaluation unit:

Oh to be clear, I was not suggesting that the X5 UI is problem free. For example, the scanning and database do not currently work properly. Mine was a general complaint about the expectation that one should just be able to pick up a device and immediately know how to use it.

The X5 can now be preordered in the UK from here: http://www.ea-audio.co.uk/fiio_x5.html. £289.99 ($477) is a bit steep compared to what we previously thought, don't you think?

I suppose it is for preorder.

Yeah, that's typical rip-off Britain for ya!

I'd rather buy an X5 from China or the USA and risk the customs - it'd probably still work out cheaper!

Sorry James, I know you want dealers to support the warranty, etc, but when there's such a premium, you really can't blame us DAP-buyers for seeking a better deal in different markets.

Ok so I previously read the x5 was to be released March 3rd or 4th and more recently I

read that it would be released March/April. Does any Fiio rep or an informed headfier have a more solid date of release?

Thank you for your thoughtful responses...

This is my player, not an evaluation one.

Anyone know if FIIO plans to make a case for the X5 with a clip on it, or if there are any 3rd party one's available? I plan to use it in the gym and I normally clip my iPhone onto my side, would like to be able to do the same with the FIIO if it's possible.
