Apparently, it is not easy to find docking connectors of sufficient quality.

Hifiman is doing it for HM901.... and hopefully it will be compatible with HM802... you know that makes it more attractive to collect 802 instead... anyway, just a thought but I guess it is not easy to pull it off....

Turned into a S-mod it kills your 901 ;).

In  regards to purchasing a good amp that will help but that still doesn't mean it will sound better than a single AK120. You are only as strong as your weakest link. :P

The price, and the brand they've tried to create for it using the exotic leather and sleek design.

But price does not make something prestigious.  If it did, all manufacturers should double or triple their prices immediately to gain the benefits of being prestigious.  Maybe Beats could start their pricing at $1K from now on to be "prestigious" here on Head-Fi?  No, I think not.

As for leather, I can assure you that I do not consider Astell & Kern prestigious for having used it.  It's nice, I don't mind it in the slightest.  But if anyone thinks that including a leather case inside of the box is going to make me think a company is prestigious, that's just silly.  And what's more, I think that if we were to take a poll, many AK1XX owners would agree with me.

And having a sleek design is just good business sense, since many people appreciate that... regardless of cost.  There are sleek devices to be found at every price point, and they consistently outsell their kludgier counterparts.

Prestigous I think will include many characteristics. Build quality, Design, Price, Brand name. All these characteristics fits Astell & Kern. They have well established themselve as a luxurious brand for DAP with all the marketing and hype, design is subjective but I think to most it is one of the best if not the best looking DAP out there. Build quality to me is still unmatched, and the pricing is disgustingly high especially for their AKS01 dock.

Similarly to branded handbags - Hermes, Prada, LV or other branded watches and clothes, prestige incurs the jelly feeling and desire/want from others.

No need to be defensive. I'm just letting you know what is what, based on the extensive marketing expertise I've gained binge-watching Mad Men.

Take Hyundai. I never used to take them seriously or even come close to regarding them as prestigious until I saw their flagship Genesis line's design. The AK series has been set up as a luxury/prestige brand, even within our little niche market.

I'm not saying the product hasn't been set up to be marketed as a prestigious product. What I'm saying is if anyone buys a AK120 because he thinks others will look at him as a prestigious person because he bought a pricey product they're seriously diluting himself.

Lol, I'm not being defensive.  Okay wait, lemme tell you guys how my decision making tree went with the AK120 and you'll see where I'm coming from.

I was looking for a good-sounding DAP with high-res support about six months ago.  At the time, I wanted a unit that would easily fit in my pocket.  This automatically rules out a brick of any kind.  So my options at the time were:

  • iBasso DX100
  • iBasso DX50
  • HiFiMAN HM-901
  • Colorfly C4
  • Astell & Kern AK120

Once I delved into the DX50's feature set, I pretty much ruled out the DX100.  On top of that, I got into a bit of a row with an idiot rep from Colorfly.  She was spamming a multitude of audio-related Facebook groups, including the Head-Fi group.  And when I complained about that, she accused me of having some kind of bias against Colorfly and asked why I couldn't support them instead.  Crazy wench.  That took the C4 off my list.  So now we have:

  • iBasso DX50
  • HiFiMAN HM-901
  • Astell & Kern AK120

Then I got a chance to audition the HM-901 and found it not to my liking.  That left me with:

  • iBasso DX50
  • Astell & Kern AK120

And then, I just got tired of waiting for the DX50.  It was a simple as that.  So...

  • Astell & Kern AK120

FTW.  I can assure you guys, at no time was prestige (or any of its constituent qualities) even remotely a concern for me.  Nor do I consider it prestigious now.  It works well for me.  It does what I want it to do.  And I like how it sounds.

comeon now ppl, don't go off topic!!

i think its not prestige as ppl(general) will actually laugh at u when u tell them that u have a dap that costs north of 1000$:veryevil:

i have yet to listen to these things but atleast on paper they put the very best chips inside these toys!!

we are no one to question someone's decision, are we?

Also, if I wanted prestige for owning something I'd look into name brands more well known such as Porche, Lexus, Rolex or even Abercrombie & Fitch not Astell & Kern. Most people on here would recognize an AK120 but I can walk around my city waving my AK120 around in plain view for months on end and most people would think its some cheap MP3 player or at the very most something slightly more expensive then an iPod. There was really no thought of prestige involved in owning a AK120 when I bought it.
