The X5 uses a PCM1792, there's also a variation of the design which is marketed as the DSD1792. The latter requires a specific type of digital receiver chip in order to process DSD data.

Why not the PCM/DSD1794? Doesn't the 1792 require a separate SPI? Or does the CPU double for those duties as well?

I'm looking for the decision cycle. Not supporting DSD is a design decision. Before going GAGA over the next greatest format I would like to see how many manufacturers think it will still be around in a year or two.

No idea. I suppose that since 1792 supports both TDMCA and SPI it could also do DSD. I should probably stay away from any speculation on the device's engineering save for opining that there may be a difference in the availability/pricing, featuresets or compatibilities of the respective chips or the choice of clock or receiver which may have been responsible for FiiO's decision. I don't expect them to comment either way and being that portable DSD playback is a niche within a niche I don't think it's really that important.

Will the battery be user replaceable or we will have to send it to FiiO?

You don't have to send it in, just need to know how to unscrew 4 screws to open the player up and buy the battery from FiiO.

That's fine and pretty user friendly. One more big plus for X5.

It is not exactly an user- replaceable battery like those in a cellphone. It just designed so an user can do it at home without soldering skill if (s)he doesn't want to send it back for battery replacement.
