I'll think in my case, I will trade in a current X3 for a X3 that has a scroll wheel... if there is such a thing that is :S

I agree with you about the size - I will not accept something as big as the 901 / DX100 unless it is justified by being very, very special indeed, on a technical level, resulting in high-end SQ.  Having owned the DX100, I don't really wish to own another DAP that is more than 70% as thick or 70% as heavy.

While we're on the topic of cheaper HiFiMan DAPs, I hadn't forgotten about the 602/601, but I feel they were/are too awkward to make it into the mainstream marketplace, especially now Fiio's X3 offers decent SQ at a very reasonable price. Who knows if iBasso will ever get the DX50 firmware to operate at a respectable level. I hope they do, because it may help them if they re-purpose the firmware for a more expensive DAP in the $500 arena, just as Fiio are doing for the X5, with what they've learned from the X3 firmware.

.

I know this is the wrong thread for this and I'm not trying to instigate something, but I'm sometimes amazed at how bad the reputation of the iBasso DX50 firmware is. I mean I have one and fiddle with it every single day and it hasn't acted up since several firmware updates ago.

sorry, back to the topic :)

Well, I'm very happy to hear that

My remark wasn't intended as 'bashing' iBasso (I often remark that, for the most part, I am a fan of their DX100) - it was merely alluding to the fact that quite a few DX50 owners here on Head-fi have expressed their displeasure at the DX50 firmware. If this has recently ceased to be the case, that is great news (not because I want a DX50 but because I wish current DX50 owners happiness with their DAP and also, for me, because it may make it easier for iBasso to release a more expensive sister DAP in future)

To be evenhanded about this, and to further reassure you that I have nothing against iBasso in particular, some have also been unhappy with the X3 firmware, when the X3 was originally released.

The point is that I know that iBasso and Fiio make efforts to refine their firmware, as time goes by, but one can never be absolutely certain that any particular DAPs firmware will reach a reliable state, even though both vendor and customer may earnestly desire this.

In the happy event that success is achieved with a firmware, then it's great for everyone, not just for the DAP concerned, but also for sister models that may be released above or below the original DAP model, in the near future.

The X5 may be an example of this kind of scenario bearing fruit.

I didn't mean to imply that you were bashing DX50, but if my post came out like that, than accept my apologies :) weird thing is, there are two threads about DFX50: one is appreciation thread and the other one is bug fix thread. well, everyone who has something negative to say says it on the appreciation thread and the bug fix thread on the other hand is like a friendly club of DX50 lovers :D

sorry, won't go off topic again

To be honest, I can't really afford the X5 right now, but everything about it is interesting to me (even the dimensions, that some people here don't like). it's quite a long time till march, so maybe I could save up some money for it, but justifying it is another problem

Oh, it's cool, I realised you weren't having a go at me - I only elaborated because I just didn't want you thinking that I was, perhaps, bashing iBasso

The mention of the DX50, in this X5 thread, was within an appropriate context, since we were only discussing firmware and how it can (positively or negatively) influence subsequent models, from each vendor.

Justifying it is the easy part!

I really hope the X5 has the similar sonic quality of HM901. At least, I know Fiio wont screw us by putting two 8740 chips and calling it "reference".

I am not clear if DSD will be natively supported on the X5 although the hardware seems to support so. I am just worried that the firmware will do PCM conversion before playback.Anyway, flawless playback of highres flac up to 24/192 is good enough for me already.

Unfortunately, some users are apparently still having hellacious experiences.

Wow! LOL!

I'm all for optimism, and I'm sure the X5 will sound very nice, but being on-par, sonically, with the HM-901 is rather a big ask!

If it is, the whole world will be buying X5s and Apple will go out of business (now there's a thought....)

One needs to dream...

X3 is already a good testament that a portable player with high res support can be bought at a reasonable price...

Asyn 24/192 usb dac feature suprised us even more of how generous Fiio is to their customers...

Another hidden bonus is how "modder friendly" x3 is to allow dac and opamp upgrade... Which isnt the case with dx50...

Anyway, i am tuning in for more pleasant suprises

FiiO X5 may not be able to fully destroy Apple iPod market...yet. FiiO X5 is on the same price as iPod Touch 5 which features so many things. Maybe if FiiO work really hard on the appearance of X1 [as well as SQ], at $100, it may be a good comparison against Apple iPod Nano. Of course, we are not comparing SQ here... FiiO will for sure win xD

Yeah, Apple's brand reputation can't be down. They are The godfather for the portable MP3 rig(especially among mass reach and production, yeah mils),nobody can't deny that and already a history.(im not into sound quality here).

But FiiO's lineup would definitely a challenge to other DAP brands like Cowon,iBasso,AK,colorfly, hisoundaudio, hifiman for sure and sony will be on the list soon with their high end DAP NWZ-ZX1's debut soon(can't think about cheaper Jaben's biscuit and the costlier Terra).

Sooner or later, people who's looking to buy iNano / iShuffle, shall look into FiiO's X1 and those looking for iClassic might go for the FiiO. X3 if FiiO get the marketing right! There might be some other teenagers go for the Apple still for the brand name though

1, I think Apple will discontinue the production of iPod, maybe just one iPT. because everyone will change to iPhone or Android phone and other smartphone.

2, We will focus on " High Resolution Audio Player ", and in this market, X3 already became the best sales in quantity.  and we will develop more model to satisfy the different requirement from user

I agree and know that FiiO will focus mostly on HD quality! I doubt they will discontinue the iShuffle though.. It's really small and suitable for sports [ Whenever I go jogging, I can see a lot of people with iShuffle clipping on their shirt.

yes, I will stop the mp3 business  if I am the CEO of  SONY, they are too big so the mp3 means nothing for SONY. even they take all the market share in mp3 market.
