I have removed my post, but allow me to rephrase the point I was trying to make in a more polite manner:

If these people (whoever they are) do not realise that we are a bit fed up trying every next dap out there costing either the earth or not as much ( money not the real issue here)
offering some seriously inferior to Rockbox interface (for example) and not especially inspiring designs, basically not particularly well thought devices, it is time they really listen to our opinion how to finally make a device that fits most of the things all of us here keep writing pages about.
Ultimately it is their right to make whatever device they like, but I personally feel I have participated enough in experiments of this kind and would rather pay more to an established company like Meridian to make a product that would not have any below par quality issues at least that require it shipped back miles away for repair or replacement( has happened more than ones)!

Really? Meridian? Aren't you forgetting the Explorer issues and all the people sending them back because of that ridiculously high ~50ohm output impedance?

Anyway, that's not a matter to discuss here. As it has been said many times - if you don't like what you see then don't buy it. Right now you're just speculating about issues that you don't know whether the X5 will have. As far as the design, now that's a personal preference -some people like one thing others like something different but if the looks are what's stopping you to buy an audiophile DAp then you should probably stick to a Rockboxed sansa.

Yet we don't know what they're making in the quantities their selling at. At some point it becomes a why bother situation. It's simple to just not buy it if one feels that way but gouging? Does it cost 30% more to make a UM MIracle than an AK100? It's a silly pretense in this market induced value segment.

Not wishing to get into an off-topic (and unproductive) exchange here, but I believe the nail in the coffin of iRiver's reputation, with regard to price-gouging, was when they decided to charge DOUBLE the cost of an AK100 for the AK120. Sure, we don't know how much more it costs to make an AK120 than an AK100 but I'm pretty darned confident it doesn't cost twice as much to make an AK120. Whilst I wouldn't choose words as strong as the earlier poster, it is, nonetheless, disingenuous as hell, and iRiver know it.

I don't expect the X5 to be a giant-slayer (particularly as I'm guessing Fiio probably have plans for an X7 sometime in late 2014), but I do hope the X5 beats the AK100 and gets embarrassingly close to the AK120, SQ-wise, and all for $400+ bucks. iRiver rightly deserve to 'have their noses rubbed in it', so-to-speak, for being so greedy with their pricing structure for the A&K product line, IMO, and Fiio have already shown willing to offer customers great value for money.

@ Fiio:

Can we assume, from the pre-production sample in the photograph, that the X5 is on-target to be released in China before the end of 2013?

Point taken and last thing I want here is to start a fight.
I stick to a lot more than a Sansa tho:cool:

LOL - classic Head-fi...

As things hot-up, in the final furlong, prior to release, the bickering increases.

Same thing in the NW-ZX1 thread.

And so it goes...

I wasn't trying to derail the topic sorry.

subbed.

I always love fiio products.

I don't really care about the looks of x5 in that pics.

What matters is the SQ and UI especially. I'm not gonna spend 240$ to buy crappy UI that makes you deaf.

hope the sq can be on par with ak100

I better keep quiet or a really good product will only get some more bitch slapping. It's no different than $200 cables, $900 earphones etc. It just seems that AK is the current easy  target. I like my $1k earphones as well. The fellow that makes those uses an AK120 by the way.

I'm in this thread because I'm genuinely interested in the X5, not because I care if it will rub anything else's nose in it, LOL.

James, is LO level at 1.5V rms or 1.7v or user adjustable this time around?
Sorry if I have missed this piece of info earlier on...
