I think it has a lot to do with space limitations. Battery would lose about 1/2 of it's capacity for the extra room required for clips, compartment and the battery's own plastic case. Either that or the X5 would need to be larger. It's a performance compromise and one I that prefer in a performance based flagship product that needs a bit of current to do it's thing. 2 replaceable batteries for the same playtime as the one included wouldn't thrill me. Making it larger to hold a larger replaceable is also something I'm glad that they chose not to do.

I m surprised not more is being discussed for the pcm1792. To me it is the headline feature and position X5 differently vs the wm8740 camp and the ess9018 camp and with a possibility getting the best of both - great musicality and dynamic range with excellent details and resolution.

Was gonna go with the zx1 as my next purchase but had rescind my preorder and X5 is really shaping up nicely, especially the new UI design.

Could it have been better? Sure as personally I feel the requests for more put out power, swappable battery, up to date SoC, all of the inputs and outpus, etc are more than welcomed, but putting on a product management hat I can totally understand James's dilemma and hence the balanced try to struck.

Can't wait to get mine and hear it. smily_headphones1.gif

I'm looking forward to this also. I have the DX50 and am not impressed. So I hope this blows it away.

Didn't found DX50 to be better than my mod'ed X3, as far as SQ is concerned. Unless X5 is only as good sounding as X3, which is extremely unlikely, it shouldn't have any problem be better sounding than DX50.

On side note, I have the PCM1792 on Essence STU and it is indeed much better DAC than WM8740.

Good to hear. And with a good looking UI, I can't wait. I caught the bug. I'm listening to the Dragonfly/BH2/V6-S combo right now on the PC with some nice 24/96 files while looking at that UD110 (I put in an email today), and just put an order in for the UAE23.

By the way, thanks for all of your input on these devices. My lady hates you. ;)

I really like the 1792 but I wouldn't call it the best of both and more of an alternative. The ESS is a  more sophisticated design and the Wolfson should get the job done as well. That said, I do like the crisp without being bright character of the 1792. Should also pair well with FiiO's sometimes warmish amps. There will always be those that prefer a smoother ESS or warmer Wolfson tendency.

Excuse me, but where can i preorder x5? Ive' seen one form on the line but it seems like it was made from uk customers.

I think you need to wait a little bit more. It will hit Eu around March, next year. You can check official FiiO Distributors in Eu region and preorder as soon as they put the device on their list.

Man, that wait is really agonizing... Knowing zx1 and calyx m is coming out of the blue! I hold off my pre order with zx1 and i can only have one among the 3 choices, so bad patience is not one of my virtue. Hope hope hope....

ZX1 will hit the Europe even later than X5, if it will ever come here. Calyx M needs at least a year to come out, there is nothing but speculation about it for the moment (apart from the tiny small info already posted). I wish you to calm down mate ;)

I must agree mimoulle! But these new breed of daps lately certainly raise the bar with 2 notches realizing how tight is the competition now and i believe there will be some answers from i river and others. I call this madness and this never ends as long as we all here. Man i wish i have the same level of satisfaction 2 yrs years ago but then again im happy and sad now that im broke hahaha! still hoping though...

Those Sony engineers posted some detail on ZX1 over at their website, though so far I didn't really see anything interesting as far as hardware implementation goes. They are talking about +/- voltage supply rail, OFC cable and the use of audiophile caps, which are all being done years ago by others. As for Calyx M, it looks like a smartphone without the phone from the outside. BBK already trys to push for audiophile level smartphone with their Vivo X3, it will be disappointing if Calyx M is about the same thing (but minus the phone) as far as innovation goes.
