IIRC, the parts are not quite on par with the AK100, in terms of quantifiable performance metrics.  Reviews seem to echo this truth, as many have said that the X3 doesn't have the resolution of the AK100 and that listeners can hear it.  Whether this makes the AK100 worth the extra money is another matter.  I for one, expect the X5 to provide equal or better sonic performance than the AK100 and similarly priced players, but with a much lower price.  The ~$400 price tag will make it the perfect compromise.

James,
I saw that your animation photo called X5 a "USB DAC". So we are expecting X5 to be a USB DAC at launch, correct? Please keep up your excellent work.

That's very neat looking, James.

I just hope it has an upper end DAC and a better amp section than the x3.  It was slightly to warm and bassy for me.

I thought the bassiness was in keeping with the Fiio sound?

mis-post

James has stated that the X5 is intended to be tuned more neutrally than the X3:

The DAC is listed on the first post of this thread as PCM1792DAC

and also, James states it here:

Well....I can officially skip this DAP then.
