Don't do it - I've tried twice, both with a Sandisk SSD, and with a Samsung S1 Mini, and at the moment USB HDDs do NOT work on the X5 (although swear I saw a post somewhere where it says it is in development) - looking forward to when it does happen, as the SSD is a nice cheap 120GB unit (in the enclosure, same size, but lighter than the E12), and the Samsung drive (tiny little thing, which will fit in the carry case!) is 200GB - plenty enough space then!

Freeformat (lame) can go up to 640kbps (essentially lossless) but - to confirm, freeformat does not work correctly on the X5, so - disregard this anyway smily_headphones1.gif

My tooth hurts...

I think musicheaven has stated that he recommends the X5 to people around him but is himself waiting for the X7... I hope the X7 will fit the case we gifted him when the time comes tongue.gif

What about this PNY 256 GB turbo flash drive. Seems like just what OTG was meant to work with. But it's really big storage, right. See tiger direct link below. Any sense on whether this should work. I'm really thinking of buying it for $99 shipped. That is a lot of extra storage and is small. Should work with x5 cabling.

Peter,

No logical reason for that pendrive not to work smily_headphones1.gif seems to be only HDDs that have issues (from my limited exposure, the biggest pendrive I have is only 64gb, and that works fine)...

Damn though, 256gb... tempting...

Hi Joe any news or update on the X7? I want to drive the X5 with a Sennheiser HD650 but the amp is not powerful enough. Don't want to stack another amp to it like E12. Prefer the simplicity of just the one device DAP. I really hope the X7 will have powerful amp to drive 300 ohms+ headphones and equal or better sound quality to the X5.

Seriously though, glad it fits well in the case. This means I could use the HS7 to pack either my X3, X5, or DX90 + E12 DIY smily_headphones1.gif

Not sure if you saw the post a few pages back about the Meenova mini-microsd adapter. Very small footprint to connect up to 128GB (at this time) to OTG port.

Yeah but this is much cheaper for much more storage.

Are people not noticing that the x5 comes with an adapter for OTG function that is micro USB on one side and a female USB on the other. I think OTG function was originally conceived of as working with thumb drives, which have male USB plugs.

Correct, yes smily_headphones1.gif

Just doesn't work with (won't say all, but - seemingly most) portable HDDs that can be self powered at this time, although there are plans in the works from what I understand from this thread to remedy that.

jbr1971 - Yup, ordered one of those yesterday when the second drive I bought didn't work (now, with a 20 day delivery estimate, I guess the question is, which will come first the micro sd reader, or a firmware update to allow HDD / SDD usage...)

True. I keep looking at it from a portability/footprint standpoint.

Ouch, other than the fact that it is stupidly expensive, this is one way around the HDD USB OTG not working...

Mr Joe Sir: A rave review by musichaven on your product X5, yet according to his profile Ibasso not Fiio seems to be his preference.  I however own both and know of what I speak.  Thank you sir for your input.
