I am looking for a budget monster to pair with my X5. Anyone got any recommendations? Preference is something under $50 that won't have the cable go over my ear, but will simply hang down...

My recommendation based on your existing earphones and the requirement for better isolation

Here you go for eBay UK as that was the only seller when I ordered mine.

But there is a UK seller on eBay UK now

Coming from the x3 and the dx50, the x5 has great bass detail.  However I'm not sure what is missing.  There was a satisfying thump to certain drums and synthetic bass beats that is not present in the x5.  Don't get me wrong, the x5 has alot of bass, but almost no 'thump' at the beginning of each hit.  You know, like the 'boom' is missing the B and is just 'oom.'  Perhaps missing that part of the spectrum is what makes the x5 so clear, perhaps not.  Or perhaps it is the x3, clip zip and dx50 that is unnatural. I tried the line out, and hp out, and tried the jds c5 amp, and the e11 amp, and without.

I'm not dissatisfied with the x5, just wondering what the deal is.  If it wasn't missing that, this player would be perfect and I would never need to look for another player again.

Bass slam or midbass you mean 😎...i don't like too much midbass only subbass😃
post #8482 of 11254

so you're saying bass slam is midbass?  Not sure if im reading you right.  I think its missing that bass extension because I'm only hearing half of it.  But as the bass continues to linger and rumble lower on the x3, it goes quiet on the x5.

For the UK, the case can be found at EA Audio - http://www.ea-audio.co.uk/products.html - [One of] FiiO's official UK distributors...

FWIW, I bought a Nintendo 3DSXL case, fits the stack and IEMs perfectly (without needing to unplug the amp) from 'Game' - http://www.game.co.uk/en/gameware-3ds-xl-deluxe-starter-pack-blue-201772?pageSize=20&categoryIdentifier=21357&catGroupId=

£2.99 online or £3.99 in store, comes with extras too, which I've thrown away, but the USB car charger may come in handy ;o)

thanks for the links

Just got my X5 earlier this afternoon and it will be replacing my aging iPod Classic U2 30GB.  My cans of choice for the X5 are the Grado RS1i and I must say that this combo is impressive right out of the box and the SQ is quite well worth the upgrades. I'm finding the bass quantity and quality just right for me and that may be due to the RS1i mid bass hump.

Just some PIA observations using a Mac:

- gotta hate those OSX hidden files - the all show up in folder view - will have to my Win7 VM to delete these

- copying my iTunes Playlists to individual folders on the card ends up with a lot of duplicate files

- most of my files were ripped via iTunes in lossless format - only problem is that iTunes starts the filename off with the track number

I definitely will have to come up with a simple workflow to get rid of the hidden files and remove the first 3 characters from each track name.

My use case is pretty simple as I just want to keep my top 1500 songs on it and maybe my top 50 albums so right now, no real complaints with the UI and navigation but not nearly as simple as the iDevices.

Other than that, really enjoying the sound and like a said, a very nice and definitive upgrade in SQ form the iDevices.  Impressions to come as I've had a chance to spend some time with it (and let it run for a 100 hours or so).

Nice job FiiO!

Nothing is perfect, but sometimes we get oh so close.  That would be totally a subjective thing.  Change DAP, headphones, amps, eq adjustment etc.  These are just a few of the things that can change what we listen and hear. I have a number of all of these and have made numerous adjustments that work to my taste.  Best of luck in adjusting to yours.

Google "Eject for Windows" this will solve the files left behind, I know this as I am on a Mac

What you are describing here is what I was noticing as well when I first got my X5 last week - call it "thump" or I like to call it "punch" - but a clean "boom" was missing with just the X5 - and this was most noticeable with my IEMs.  Funny thing is, after several listening sessions with my IEMs (UE TripleFI 10) and Bose QC15 - I started to get used to the X5s bass signature by itself - it is still very present, and clean - just not the "punch" I like or am used to.

OK - So today I got the stacking kit and the E12 Mont Blanc - and after tweaking around with the various setting (X5 gain, E12 gain, E12 bass boost, etc.) I can definitely report that the E12+X5 combination makes up for the missing "thump/punch/boom" in many songs - great combination (although a bit bulky coming from a Cowon S9) :gs1000smile:

As I mentioned in previous posts, before I got my E12 I tried my E17 which has separate Treble & Bass adjustments - which gave me more freedom to experiment and tweak to my liking - I still wish the X5 had this capability to give more flexibility to the end user to tweak it to his/her liking - but that being said, the E12 with the X5 is quite spectacular (with bass boost ON) - need to spend more quality time with it (burn-in ?!?) - but I am liking what I hear so far.

Final comment is:  just like a "great" wine, the quality of the sound is subjective - and to each his or her own - so - your mileage may vary!

Cheers,

R:Fox

DEFINITELY going to support FiiO with the development of the X7 if I get opportunity, and will preorder at the earliest opportunity.

X5/E12 also looks (and fits!) better in jacket pocket than Sony ZX1/PHA2 smily_headphones1.gif

Thank you all at FiiO for your constant innovation / development smily_headphones1.gif
How wrong was I?! On the bus right now in a world of sonic bliss smily_headphones1.gif

Hey Duncan, i haven't got the e12, but the hs6 e12 plus x5 was the reason i got tempted to buy after already heaving the Sony combo,
I agree with you the pha2/zx1 is too big and the Fiio one is sweet:)
I would say, the Sony is prob a little bit superior sound wise, but Fiio is great, just different and i could be happy with both, after all i already had the Sony combo and still got the x5, now I'm thinking dx90+pure ii,but honestly i think all of these setups are superb, so either try it all,ha ha and then decide or just live and be happy as it is, i might get the e12 and return the Vorzuge, still have a week or so.
I am about to sell the zx1 definitely, but might keep the pha2 which is superb (not that the zx1 isn't,just i will stick with Ibasso) or sell both, we'll see:)

Thanks.. also found 'Bulk Rename Utility' for windows and I think I can rename just skipping the first 3 characters.

Edit - also found Better Rename 9 for Mac so I'm covered :)

Now, on to some serious X5 listening..
