Fiio X5 Thread - info updated on Jan 17th 2014 - Page 415

Preben, you may also want to look at the Shure SE846's as well, they sell for $1000 new, and are a great pairing with my X5, no need for the E12 for them either.

Do I understand correctly that there is no playlist support? What about random playing of a certain folder, or a certain genre? These are some basic features I'm accustomed to.

Thanks! Hdphns.com expects X5 on stock on Monday, and they deliver to NL within 24 hours. Tempted if I can be convinced about the playlist and shuffle play support being good enough.

Still wondering about battery replacement, user serviceable?

Maybe I should be starting a new thread on this?  Have any X5 owners been able to connect the device using the micro USB cable to a Windows 7 PC for transferring files?

I am trying to do the following - per X5 user manual:

"Storage: when the X5 is connected to a computer via USB, allows access to TF
cards inserted into the player like a card reader, for transferring songs. The
cards will appear as computer drives. You can drag and drop, copy or delete
songs and create directories to store songs."

I never get the message - per Quick Start Guide - "USB connected.  Please eject drives before disconnecting".  Has this worked for anyone?

If you did get it to work, what did you need to do to have the PC recognize that a new storage device has been connected?  Mine works for charging only (X5 is in 'storage' mode).  Same result using another micro USB cable, so it's not the cable.

Or is everyone pulling the card from the X5 to connect to a PC card slot, as I do.  According to the manual it should be possible to do data connectivity directly with the cable.

Appreciate any thoughts on this, thank you.

Don't have X3 or X5, but from experience with similar gadgets: ensure the player is in USB data transfer mode, if applicable. Try different USB ports on your computer, not behind a USB hub. Plug it in, turn it off, turn it back on. Unplug, turn it off, plug in, turn it on. And other iterations of those sequences. Force the ports to USB low speed mode. If you're plugging into a USB3 port, try a USB2 port.

Metalomaniac - all good suggestions - tried them all, thank you. Odd thing is all other USB devices are being recognized except the X5.

When I get a chance I will try it on another machine to determine whether problem is with PC or with X5.

I had a chance to compare the X5 with my RWAK100 yesterday and now I'm really torn. To my ears the RWAK100 had a slightly smoother sound (I was using UM Miracles) with perhaps more overall space in the soundstage, but the X5 had slightly more presence in the vocals, etc. and possibly a little more treble energy.

Has anyone else spent an extended period of time with an AK100 (mk 2 or modded) and X5 to provide some SQ comparisons?

I'm on the fence about selling my RWAK100 and going to the X5 to use both on it's own, but also in a stack with the Fiio E12DIY

Unfortunately, they don't have playlist support. I would have suggested they prioritise that over DSD support.

While I don't own them, from reading forums there is a lot of buzz about the J Harvey Roxanne CIEMs. Not sure you would need the extra power.

I've found the FitEar Parterres to be an excellent match with the X5. They aren't quite as capable as the Roxannes or UERM in resolution (though they have an excellent treble, very non-IEM-like) so my AK240 doesn't seem to provide a significant benefit over the X5 for them, nor does adding a Pico Power to the chain. So I'd say it'd only be worth considering using an amp with the X5 for demanding full-sized headphones, eg: Planars and maybe HD-800s.  My Grado-like Symphones Magnums didn't benefit from the Pico Power either.

That sounds like the difference between opamps and the circuit. I had the Mezzo-modded AK100 and with 1plus2s the Pico Power added a bit of capability on fast, demanding tracks, but not $475 of capability, so I reckon stick with one or the other for your Miracles and enjoy the size convenience of not having to carry a brick to enjoy music.

Has anyone tried this with JH Roxanne's yet? If so how comparable are they?

I've ha my Roxanne's for about a week, iPhone 5 sound isn't cutting it, now I'm on the hunt for a good DAP.

have it narrowed down to this, the ZX-1 or the AK120, about to pull the trigger on the ak120 but want to research the X5 first

I think you should find the X5 is a much better value than the AK120. A lot of people are even saying they prefer the sound of the X5 over the AK120, so it may be best to give both a listen if at all possible before purchasing one or the other.

If it helps, personally for me, I picked the AK120 over the RWAK100 due to better detail, I then picked the ZX1 over the AK120 due to greater soundstage and slightly more treble focus. I had the X5 demo before sending it off to Currawong (of which it seems it'll be handed back to me for, say, "long term demo"). To me, when I first heard the ZX1 I thought that it proved one could get better sound for a cheaper price (compared to the AK120, but with some sacrfices...eg. fixed storage vs microSD).

When I received the X5 demo a few months back, although in terms of sonics, I felt I preferred the ZX1 for my tastes, the X5 proved to be extremely great value for money even more so than the ZX1. The X5 is more neutral, although the ZX1 still has the edge over the X5 in terms of soundstage. But the X5 is also 1/2 the cost of the ZX1, and aside from soundstage, the X5 was more powerful and more versatile (can be used as a DAC/Amp, has regular charging ports instead of proprietary WM-port, etc.).

When I get the demo X5 back, I can do another 2nd round comparison to the DAPs I have in hand.

Setup requires that the device is plugged in. Please connect the device you want to install and make sure it is turned on. If your device is currently connected, please unplug and replug it.

X5 is showing that it is charging from the USB connection to the PC.

Tried another mini USB cable with same result: charging, but no Upnp USB connectivity - no 'hello, I see you have a new device connected' dialog that I get from all other USB connections (WD drives, iPod, iPhone, DVD recorders, keyboard, mouse, headset etc.)

Guess I will try re-installing the version 1.20 firmware unless there are other suggestions.

Anyone know if Fiio provides technical support?

Thank you.

you can always shoot an email to support@fiio.net. BTW, try to connect X5 to the USB port on the back of your PC.

What particularly do you feel is missing with the iPhone 5?  I haven't found the X5 to be an upgrade from mine with IEMs, more a cross-grade with a different tuning, though that being said, I have mostly compared with acoustic music and haven't done my usual bass-loaded music test and I need to do a re-run with full-sized headphones too.

That is really strange and disappointing. I would have thought that is a feature added in early beta stage in a DAP - and this is the 2nd (?) DAP from FiiO.

Do they at least allow random play from user-defined folder structure or within a genre? This would be a decent workaround. Or are those like me who listen on shuffle mode pretty much SOL?
