Fiio X5 Thread - info updated on Jan 17th 2014 - Page 366

Sorry if this has been asked already (the Fiio site is not working for me right now), but how should the micro sd card be formatted? FAT32, exFAT, NTFS? Which one is the best?

depends on you but I don't usually format, but when I do it's ntfs.

if they are small music files fat32 is fine. Dsd files are too big for ntfs I believe.

I'm really thinking of getting one of these but the 28mW @ 300ohms I don't see that being enough to power my HD600 sufficiently. Does the X5 work well and sound good while using an external amp for more power?

I am a novice but I have been reading this thread for quite some time and think I learned a few things.  This DAP has a decent internal amp.  I don't think you will get full SQ using this with your HD600 but I definitely plan to get an external amp for home use.  I decided to invest in the Fostex TH900 so I could get by until I can afford a Bakoon or Hugo.

As for travelling and being mobile I don't know many people who will use full size cans. Maybe consider for portable use easy to drive IEM's?

To each their own so, I am told (by this thread) the Fiio E12 is a good option for a portable amp for this and they are making some clips so it stacks well and looks great together.  I think Fiio said these can be purchased together about 30 days after the initial international release or something like that.  I read that it may have a bit of a different sound signature which is good and bad depending on your preferences.

Yeah I'm talking about using them at home or work not for when I'm out and about I have a few pairs of IEM's for that. I'd use the dac with my computer but when I'm laying down to go to sleep I listen to music so I'd probably buy a nice amp to pair with it or just use my C&C BH which has plenty of power for the HD600.

I want to make sure that the sound signature is what I'd like and after reading some reviews they seem to fit the bill. I'm looking at the X5, HM-700 and DX50 and all 3 seem to have a lot I like about them so its a tuff choice.

I tested it with the HD600 and it powers it easily - with no loss of dynamics.

The power required for an HD600 is sometimes vastly over stated.  They are a relatively easy can to drive, and the X5 handles it more than sufficiently.  I tested both the DT880 250ohm and HD600 volume matched against my NFB-12 (desktop amp with a lot of power) - and the X5 did not show any loss of SQ.

For the HD600 - forget the amp.  You don't need it.

You know, I've noticed that I can get the volume up with my HD600 pretty loud with just my phone though the sound quality isn't there.

I'll also be using my HE-400 a little with the player and I find that both the HD600 and HE-400 are around the same volume level with what ever source I use so the X5 will be just fine. I like the over all look of the X5 over the other's though looks aren't a high priority but user interface is and the X5 looks to be good plus the fact I can use it as just a DAC is a huge plus.

Truly agree with you my HD600 never had any problems being driven, I also think that the HD600 difficult to drive headphone is over stated and as you said it does not require any amps. It's just fine on the HO, and if you really insist in having a higher gain then just go ahead and set it.

It's a tough choice having so many options and the beauty of it is all affordable.

Also does the X5 have gapless, its not a deal breaker but with some of my electronic music they're tracked but mixed so if it has gapless I don't have to join them together which saves time.

Phones are notorious for having inferior and underpowered DAC, hence the loss of sound quality.

I think gapless is pretty essential to any player these days. I would not buy one without it.
