However I'm not 100% sure about this. I'm sure more knowledgeable pandas and Joes will show up and let you know in a few hours.

Ah, right - so what you're saying is that, providing there are no more than 7000 files in each folder (assuming a basic structure of music folder>artist folder>album folder>song), then the file limit, even on shuffle, wouldn't come into play and every single individual song would, in theory, play on shuffle at some point?

Have I understood you correctly?

Cos, if so, thanks, and that makes the X5 my main contender again.

Look forward to confirmation!

My current theory is that it would shuffle an unlmiited number of songs as long as it was all in one folder.

I can try this with the X3, but I'm too lazy right now, and not sure if I can even fit 7000 songs onto a 64gb card...

The only question I ask myself is why would anybody need to shuffle this many songs? I rarely use shuffle, because I find specific songs or albums I want to listen to and play them, weird but true.

Interesting coax in and out:

Storage capacity not competitive but seems nice looking and uses cirrus I think....   This thread was getting slow but wonder how SQ will compare to X5?  hmmm...

Passing time until x5 arrives......

(ps, I know it's not in the same league)

There is already a thread for it: http://www.head-fi.org/t/711569/new-dap-hidizs-ap100

I wonder how much it'll go for. It says it will accommodate a 64GB uSd card, wonder if it can take the 128GB card, if not it's a tad too small, other than that it looks good, very portable.

It could be good if you are in a hurry, you grab and listen. :D

Thanks for the link. Ya with the pono coming out, calyx m, dx90 and fiio x1 I don't think I could afford it. I will get my x5 and th-900. Then either a bakoon, or Hugo......then another dap.

I almost wish I never found this site. Sadly headphone mania is the methadone for my previous avs hifi addiction. One set of speakers cost me more than all this put together. No more. methadone working....resisting....hifi....stereo.....urges....need...fidelity...

sorry was in a zone......

Other mitigating factor = wife now, so overspending is now rare.

By the way they posted this on that thread:

.... what's that dap??? I saw on Jaben SG Facebook but haven't researched on it yet. Is it a hi res player that can rival the likes of the X5? Seems pretty cheap tho considering Jaben SG sells SM3V2 for around 500-600 ( I forgot it's price )....

I use my player for my commute to work, so that's about 2 hours a day, 5 days a week. As I drive, selecting songs every few minutes is not practical (and I'm in the UK so, apart from anything else, like mucking about with a mobile phone it's also probably illegal). I also listen to it when I'm working at home or the only one in the office in my team (which is on average 2-3 days a week), and that 2 hours increases to over 8. As I'm working during that time (and I AM working), again selecting songs every few minutes is not really practical. But with all that, and other driving at weekends and such, you'd be surprised how quickly you work through the entire contents of a 160gb drive (with most of that at OGG between 160 and 320kbps) - about 6-9 months, give or take. When you listen to music a couple of hours every day, and have done for the last 30-odd years, that 6-9 months is nothing and you soon pick up on the repetition.

I'm one of these people (and there are a lot of us, despite what most others and manufacturers/developers seem to think) who wants direct access (not via the cloud or anything like that - too many wi-fi dead/unreliable spots where I am) to their entire music collection, so when I DO want to listen to a specific song or album, I know it's there and it's not one of the ones I had to remove to make space for something else.

But don't worry about trying it with the X3 - I think I'll wait until a few people have the player officially (and also when the UK retail price drops a bit).

My situation is very different and it's legal for me to select what I want because I'm sitting at my desk at work or at home (doing more work). I'm constantly jumping from one album to the next, whatever the mood strikes me, and also adjusting the volume. Hence I never have it on shuffle because I pretty much always know what I want to hear next.

What I do know is that shuffle works with a few hundred songs in one folder (maybe 500?). I have a folder like this on my X3, so if around 500 is enough variety for you then I think you won't have any problem. I think potentially it might be limitless if you have all your songs in one folder.

I always wondered why people asked about being able to shuffle their entire collection (as I never use shuffle) - that is actually a sensible use case.

i really need/want to be able to shuffle every song on my SD card. I have over 8000, been collecting and buying CDs since the Napster days. I am not always in the mood to hear something specifically so shuffling everything is a must. It's also nice to catch a song or two that you haven't heard in ages.

I dont get the shuffling of more than 7000 songs.. do you guys actually make it from start to finish? That would take ages!

No that is not the point of shuffling all those songs. For me its about listening to everything when not in the mood for a particular song/album.

The playlist would get generated every time on the fly so even if you only heard 1 hours worth of music it should be different the next time you do the same.

yes this.

i remember on my 2nd gen ipod touch, i believe on iOS 4.0 and lower, shuffle play wasn't random at all. started with the same song every time, same playlist.

dynamic shuffle playlist was one of the few things i require from an audio player, and thankfully FiiO provides this. (on the X3 as well)

Normally I just play by "songs" alphabet if I am not in the mood for any specific album. I usually use "album" or "artists" more often though xD

Shuffle is so not my thing haha
