MicroCD card has less transfer rate than USB 3.0, so I think if you want to play DSD files, you may need high transfer rate SD card.

@ darkan:

I play my music from a netbook too connected to a HDD 3TB via USB 3.0. It is a basic eeePC and is dedicated for this purpose and has no problem with 24/192 and ISO files. I don't know about the transfer rate but a notebook/netbook has not been designed for the sole purpose of playing music I think there is a difference, assuming that FiiO has optimized the X5 to transfer music in a more efficient way.

Did someone already make a comparison between available cards with the X5?

FWIW - I am selling my Fostex TH600 and Momentums, and keeping the HP50s.  That's how good the HP50s are.
I also have the hp50's and they stopped me buying Beyer T5p, that's how good they are...they also leak less than any other headphone and drive like a dream from a dap.....but don't take my word for it as I like the way they look too! :-)

I'm going through your reviews at the moment - and I'm a bit puzzled with one bit of info.  You commented regarding the crowding of the top ports and called it a potential issue.  I could be a 'little thick' here - but bear with me:

  • If you're using the headphone out - you won't be using a plug in either the line out or coax out sockets (there is no point)
  • If you're using the line out (ie to an amp) - you won't be using a plug in either the headphone out or coax out sockets (there is no point)
  • If you're using the coax out (ie to another dac) - you won't be using a plug in either the headphone out or line out sockets (there is no point)

If above is true - then there cannot possibly be any issues with overcrowding.

Sorry - not meaning to be overly OCD - but it appeared to me you were trying to find possible faults that didn't really exist .....

I was reviewing the C4 Pro at the same time which brought the idea of port crowding into mind.

But this also

*

There is no point, but I find that a lot of users ask questions about doing stuff like that. Mainly so they don't have to keep plugging and unplugging.

You are right though, the hp out does not work with line out is plugged in as FiiO set it.

It was mainly a point for those that have all the ideas on how to maximize X5 usage. I'm asked all the time about plugging it in here and there, or using it in many places with all these plugs etc. Just something to note to people that like to have a lot of stuff connected.

Rather than find faults that didn't exist. I, as a community fellow, took my existing knowledge of what users keep asking me about or are implying, and used that as one of the points. People generally watch reviews before they buy, or just as they buy something. Not everyone knows what this stuff is or what can be plugged in at once.

In situations where seasoned users like us use an X5, obviously such a point is uneccessary. But, I'm sure, as you have been here for a while as well, that you have heard lots of newcommers asking about using these devices in situations that are not either suitable for them, or in where its not an idea that would work well.

Just a note I added for those people out there. Because many do use these DAP's as static devices.

It's a review of mine, I noted what I believed mattered, just it is all.

I wasn't actually commenting on the "if it is possible".  I was simply saying that there would never be a reason to use more than one of the ports at a time (IMO)

~~Brooko, let me explain why I call it a very useful feature to use LO and headphone out at the same time:

I listen to my X3 with my CIEMS JH13Pro. It was one of the saddest things for me not being able to share the superior quality of my favorite music and gear with my friends at the same time. It bothered me especially when I wanted to pinpoint specific parts within a track.

I solved it by getting an universal IEM UE Tripple.Fi 10 and plugged it to the LO-port via Fiio E6 amp . The E6 can perfectly control/reduce the high volume of the LO Port. And I can - at the same time - search the device and listen with my CIEMs via HO.

Needless to say that I found a lot of fans for my gear and for audiophile listening.

I would really miss this feature when I will get my X5, but I´ll buy it anyway.

Anyone know where/when the x5+E12 bundle kit will be for sale? I'm about to pre-order from B&H but would also love to pre-order that little strap kit!

Thanks for that - your idea at least makes sense, and I can understand why it might be needed (by the very few). I'm afraid I'm still dumbfounded by Typhoon859's explanation - how you can A/B different headphones when using different amp/dac set-ups is beyond me. However - I won't go there - only leads to pointless debate. Suggest that he and I agree to disagree on that point.

I think he was limiting variables to a like to like comparison outputting from one device at the same time. Not what most of is could do due to lack of like amps readily available.

anyone here did a comparison against some dac/amp? specifically Centrace DacPort and JDS Labs C5D?

I tested it against Stoner Acoustics's UD100 and Fiio D03K, the X5 was pretty neutral.

Neil Youngs PONO is going into Kickstarter on the 15th. Details apparently due at SXSW on the 11th.
Looks like I may have a decision to make.

thanks for the response. I would expect X5 to be a lot better than the dacs u mentioned, naturally. But would like to know how X5 stand against the more capable USB DAC.

Ok then :)

Actually, the Taishan was almost the same as the X5

On a lighter (or even more sinister) note, they delayed the X5 again... :(

Gives me more time to save ;)

I just bought the HD700 - so am a little strapped anyway.  Also part of the Alpha Dog 'world tour' when it eventually gets here - and am kind of worried that if I really like that one, I'll end up getting it as well.
