Thanks for your comments, I agree with you 100%. I have an iPhone 5s and even though the sonic quality has improved it is still distant from the players we both own and is really boring flat, more like dead flat however with certain phones, it can feel more alive but never to the extent of say the X5. The only Apple product that still got me puzzled is the iPad 3rd gen sound sig, I don't know if that specific version contains a different Cirrus Logic batch DAC but I have liked it more with some types of music than the other players I have. In lower res of course and file formats it can understand. CL is getting a real bad rap these days.

Off-topic...

I want to go to New Zealand... but the plane ride seems to be too much... (I hate flying...).

That's all...

Thanks!

Is the digital out on the X5 compatible with the digital input on the Schiit Bitfrost?  I've seen the X5 output described as "digital coaxial" and the Bitfrost input as "SPDIF coaxial".  I'm guessing they are compatible but confirmation would be appreciated.   Thanks!

SPDIF = Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format = Digital Coaxial or Optical

Thanks.  Never liked the idea of pay an extra $100 for USB on Bitfrost.

Thanks CosmicHolyGhost!

So, the X5 (with 460mW into 16 Ohms) offers about thirty times as much power as the Sony NWZ-ZX1 (with only 15W into 16-Ohms) - at half the price of the ZX1...

and about seven and a half times as much power as a Sony NWZ-ZX1 paired with the Sony PHA-2 DAC/amp (with an output of only 60mW into 16-Ohms) - at one third the price, in a much smaller package.

Sony isn't even in the running except for users with deep pockets intending to use only IEMs or very efficient headphones.

This kills me, as I'm a big Sony fan, soon to be a FiiO fan, going by the X5 reviews I'm reading.

In fairness, there's more to the SQ of a DAP than it's overall power output, but I do share your concerns about Sony's apparent penchant for extremely low power output. Still, the NW-ZX1 has succeeded in luring quite a few people away from the AK100, so they must be doing something right (but this is IEM/CIEM users, as you noted).

As for the X5, well... I realise the X3 has been a big success for Fiio, but I suspect the X5 may be even more successful, even though it's a bit less affordable. The X5 needs to be successful so us audiophile geeks can eventually get our hands on an X7 ! LOL

Hi James,

Will it work the same way as E18 where you can play media from your smartphone through X5?  For example, if I can use micro-usb to micro-usb OTG cable that came with E18 and connect my Galaxy Note 2 to X5 to use as external DAC for my smartphone?  Would have been great to be able to play media from smartphone through X5 (like watching or streaming movies, YT, playing games, etc.).

Also, any plans for a more heavy duty (TPU like) case for X5?  Current silicon skin is cool, but I'm afraid it won't provide much of drop/corner protection or screen protection.  Just thinking from smartphone perspective :)

Last but not least, "Shortcut keys" upper left control button, can you change the assignment of it, etc?  Clicking on it always takes me to Play Setting menu.  Would have been great to assign something else to it like "Now Playing", so when you are scrolling through menu items you can get back to your playlist with a Shortcut instead of using a wheel to scroll to it.

Overall, my first impression of using X5 since receiving it yesterday (with Westone W40 and FiiO RC-SE1 cable) is AMAZING!!! I still can't wipe a smile off my face since the moment I power it up last night to play a few of my fav tracks.  Even the same 320kbps mp3 track played from Note 2 w/E18 and from X5 sound less compressed and brighter.  I'm very impressed!!!  Full review to follow....

I feel it is an obvious upgrade in terms of sq and higher portability without needing an amp. X5 reveals more detail and better note quality and balance/transparent...some firmware bugs but will soon be ironed out much like other daps. Except big boy like Sony
If u have chance try and demo it will worth your time
