The prices of the AKs are astronomical compared to the Fiios, so anything close to the same would be amazing.

None of us really knows, yet, but, personally, I strongly suspect that the X5 SQ will be at least on par with the AK120, and possibly slightly exceed it, even though it is being sold for a much more reasonable price.

Admittedly, the AK120 may be a sweeter piece of hardware in the hand, but in terms of audio circuitry, I will be surprised if the X5 is in any way inferior to the AK120, in terms of SQ from the headphone output.

Time will tell.

It's nice that this will at least be released in China soon, and in the rest of the world, hopefully, no more than 10 weeks from now.

I agree your comments mate. iRiver charges too much, it doesn't reflect their sound quality totally.

What do you think about X5's output power. Would it drive SE5way? (Asking you because you have more technical knowledge than I have)

I will be comparing the ZX1 to the Fiio X5 for my next DAP.  I am hoping the X5 has close to the same sound quality as the ZX1 and has a reasonably good UI.  It is worth a few hundred more dollars to me to have a good working UI.

I suspect it will drive the SE-5 very nicely, but we should wait until SE-5 owners in China actually listen to them from the X5!

I'll be getting my hands on both devices soon. I'll let you guys know.

But honestly, unless the X5 wows with its UI. The AK120 is still ahead even if it charges that much. My fellow reviewers in my review group have gotten the AK120 and they have told me it has an amazing UI.

We of the group share a similar view about DAP's right now. AK is expensive, but until another company releases a DAP that is targeted towards audiophiles that have good sound AND an amazing UI. The AK's may just be at the top.

I'll see what I have to say about the AK when I get it.

Well, Mim can help me then when he gets the X5.

For the moment, as you know my situation, it is really exciting and frustrating in the same time. Very nice news, many possibilities, daps are coming along and not everybody is like iGreedy, which is good. On the other hand, I can't buy now and I have to wait until I save enough, which will hit around X5's international release date.

If the X5 can get to the sonic level of the AK120 without the UI. I'll still be happy. Hell, I don't even have problems with the X3 UI, which isn't exactly polished.

You will get plenty of power with X5 and yet a neutral, transparent sound. So far we don't have much info but everything come to us is positive about them. Yet still FiiO tries to improve the ergonomics of the dap and make it even better an overall end product.

The fact that X3 has already plenty of power and X5 will have even more, most of us shouldn't even need an external amp.

I was comparing output power of X3 and R10, they are actually quite similar. Yes R10 pushes harder but maybe X5 with its improved amp section can reach it. We will see I guess, FiiO still hasn't revealed the specifications of X5.
I am sorry Amber but you should not be so affirmative when you have no first hamd experience on how these DAPs compare...the X5 may not be as good as his stack for all yoh know. Statimg what you believe / heard / hope to be true as facts / advice is a bit dangerous IMO. It is actually against the rules on headfi...

Sorry to create a confusion in here. I said I believe it would be a step up, not definitely it will be a setup, it was my personal guess. The reason was, the early Chinese impressions we got for X5. The impressions were saying, very transparent and neutral sound. I didn't hear his stack true but I read pretty much about both devices. I try to take my time and read as much as possible about devices, headphones etc in here.

Again, you are right, sorry to create a confusion, it was more like my personal opinion instead of a sharp information.

While I'm hoping it will be as good I have doubts about that. I'm expecting the x5 to be somewhere between the x3 and an ak120 in sound. They do have an x7 coming out eventually and I suspect that model will be closer in line to the ak120

No problem mate...some people take "older" headfiers' words for granted.

Yeah... I share your sentiment. It's a lofty goal for sure, at $400. If it can get me 90% of the way I'll be happy. In fact any substantial gain over the X3 would have me very pleased whether it can compete against the AK or not.

Thanks for your input Mimouille. I appreciate AmberOzL opinion on this matter and maybe that is what I wanted to hear as well. I like the X5 as much as you all do and its a very good thing that FiiO is including us in their process. But what I'd like to know is whether the amp in the X5 will be at least on par with my JDS Labs C421 (output / high/low gain). As I stated before I do not have a technical degree so maybe other can share there (objective) opinion/comparison.   Thanks!
