Just like to share what had been said in the Chinese Forum, erji.net:

Apparently James is working remotely from the hospital?

X5 is more neutral and transparent than X3, and the writer of this review believes X5 sounds better than AK120. AK120 seems to be better at 'controlling', however he believes the X5 has 'better' soundstage and better highs, mids, and lows. (I don't know what he means by 'better', and I believe it may be too subjective.)

Few things to note:
1. Requires amping ( the reviewer paired it with E12) to drive 'bigger' heafphones and to gain better 'control'. (This is consistent with what James told us.)

2. The reviewer is an IE800 user and loves Senheisser. He used SE846 and IE800 for comparison and believes X5 performs better on IE800 than BA based phones. (Again, I am not sure about that due to the reviewer's own preference.)

3. James and his team are working tirelessly to make final adjustments.

Please excuse my poor (and not full) translation.

To add on:

1. The reviewer commented that the X5 does a good job with the Sennhiesers (HD650, HD600, HD598) (He notes how close the HD650 sound is to the IE800), ATH-ESW9 and even the Beats headphones (lol @ his comments on how good they are with "black men's rap")

2. You can customise the UI already; the reviewer changed the fonts and the background image in the play screen to prove this.

Thanks, johnwu and darkarn, for keeping us up to date with what is being said in the Chinese-speaking forums; I really appreciate it.

I'm hoping someone in China, who speaks English fluently, may be willing to directly write a review in English for those of us outside China.

Either that, or perhaps one of our globe-trotting Head-fi members may be able to get hold of an X5, one way or another!

But look at that aggressive defensiveness...

I can very easily and simply explain why I do not have many DAPs - it is simply because ill-health has put me at financial zero for the past 18 months.  Believe me, as soon as I get back on-track, financially, I will be buying one or several DAPs. Just because I don't have the luxury, like you, of having a stable income at the moment, does not mean I cease to lose interest in what DAPs the market has to offer. My current situation is only temporary, and I am certainly not the only one who maintains a keen interest whilst lacking the funds to purchase. Head-fi does not have to be an elitist club. I don't resent anyone here for self-indulgently posting photos of their expensive DAPs/amps/DACs or whatever, for people to admire/drool over/congratulate/massage the owner's ego, etc. I observe it but do not harbour negative emotion about it and I don't expect anyone to resent me for temporarily being unable to purchase gear, through no fault of my own.

I think there is an unhealthy tendency amongst some of the 'would-be elitists' here on Head-fi that they love to view perceived 'paupers' like myself as not worthy of Head-fi membership, and love to buy all the expensive toys as soon as they are released, then gratuitously flaunt them for public adulation, and revel in both the adulation and the perceived 'respect' of others who look to them as somehow being an overnight authority on the device they've just purchased, and then have the attitude that "woe betide anyone who says anything that might burst my bubble about my latest gear 'fix' ".

I'm genuinely perplexed as to why you feel my remark was a personal dig at you, but it is clear from your above remarks that you have been ruminating about me for quite some time. Perhaps you should take a step back from head-fi participation if you are accumulating so much negative thinking, negative emotion and animosity within yourself, about one or more people across the world whom you've never met. It's very unhealthy for a person's psychological wellbeing (and I am qualified to say that).

From my side of this, I can only offer peace. I hope you can do the same.

.
Well, my post was very objective and polite, nothing personal, very unlike yours, which is indeed aggressive amd defensive.

Please refrain from giving me life advice or judging on my financials, since you know nothing about my life. I, for one, like to keep headfi disscussions about audio, personal matters are better discussed elsewhere thank you.

Anyone is allowed to post whatever they want and there is no ranking of headfiers based on ownership or importance. If you knew me AT ALL you would never suspect me of such thoughts. I am neither technician nor specialist and have often humbly sought other people's advice, including yours, on gear they own or have heard.

What I said was quite objective. People come to these threads for true advice and impressions on how these DAPs sound and how easy to use they are etc. You are one of the main posters on many DAP threads, but have little to contribute in terms of experience on these specific DAPs. This leads you, IMO, to excessively rehashing the same arguments, for instance the output power of the ZX1, ad nauseam, and in an increasingly diluted manner. I was just saying that you might leave more room to those willing to contribute actual information, not necessarily me, and not necessarily people with money, but also people who have tried these DAPs at shops or shows.

I know this remark is not nice to hear, and it might have been better by PM.

Sorry and peace to you.

I was willing to get one or two for me and a few friends, but the impressions from the Elite Club should not be trusted smily_headphones1.gif

Admittedly I have not read the last few pages of this thread, but a fair warning from someone (*me) who does read Chinese very well and hang around on various Chinese headphone forums for quite awhile, you guy should really be careful on what you read on those forums. Sometime they have good review but sometime they have, well, 'less than good' review - and by less than good, I do imply something more sinister in nature. Of course, you also have review that are strongly affected by personal bias and doesn't serve much as a solid ground of reference. Such a mix of opinions can make it quite a challenge to read these reviews and extract the right information. So don't pay too much attention unless you know for sure what you are reading is from a reliable source.

Thanks, ClieOS. I understand what you are getting at (and I did happen to see the recent discussion about this kind of thing, on the CIEM side of things, in another thread). I appreciate you trying to protect people.

As you know, even Samsung were accused of something similar, earlier this year.

And Head-fi is not immune from this, on either a member level or an administrative level (sponsors don't want bad publicity etc.).

'Caveat Emptor' remains as relevant today as it was centuries ago.

No, of course HF isn't immune to the black hole we call internet. But imagine what you believe is the worst kind of situation here and multiply it by 10, and that's about what I have seen in some Chinese forum. That will explain why the Chinese has a mentality of 'assuming fake until proven' when it comes to everything posted online.

I think not.

What follows is being said calmly, not argumentatively:

I can handle constructive criticism, and yes, PM would have been better (not for my sake but for the forum).

There is a lot of excessive fanboism and defensiveness in quite a few threads on Head-fi and elitism (even though you don't consider yourself to personally be a part of it), and I personally find defensive fanboism and elitism far more obnoxious than someone sincerely questioning the potential shortcomings of certain products, even though, I concede, that might be irksome to people such as yourself. There is, theoretically, a middle ground but if everyone was in the middle ground, there would be hardly anything to discuss (not nothing,  but drastically less). Some of us enjoy discussing the potential pros and cons of various DAPs, and have to think very carefully about where to spend our hard-saved earnings. I can see how that might annoy you, but hey... you are welcome to your opinion, just as I am mine, provided no one makes it personal.

I should also add that some people who visit threads have not read all the preceding discussion and therefore discuss from the point where they start reading. This, in itself, will lead to a certain amount of repetition. You and I are quite unusual in that we keep a close eye on threads, sometimes throughout their entire duration, but many do not.

Anyway, I really, truly have no desire for personal spats. Life is too short.

I have to smile at our different perspectives on this, when I think of the following thread (which, I hope you will note, I have never contributed to):

http://www.head-fi.org/t/682750/the-sad-state-of-the-so-called-audiophile-dap-market

Head-fi is a big melting pot of different characters and viewpoints, isn't it? :beerchug:

I didn't realise it was that bad, but thanks again for the 'heads-up'

I only go to Chinese forum to find out latest product information from Chinese manufacturers. It is very hard to read reviews from that forum......

the latest sentiment towards the X5 in Chinese forum is mainly about the look which apparently it is not very well received....and there are quite a number of people who just hate Chinese products because they are made and designed in China... it is really weird...

It looks fine. I agree it could look better but beyond sound, if it's well made and functional as I expect from FiiO, I'm real good. If I want something pretty I can buy a bracelet.

Well as aesthetically un-appealing the x5 is; lets hope it sounds great.

As, I'm more of a "budget" dap person and generally stay away from the TOTL daps (dx100, AK, HM901).  I think the X5 is the highest I'd go.  Waiting for some impressions from members who own TOTL daps and can compare them to the x5.

Looking at the different Fiio daps; they just seem to be a hodge-podge of designs.  You wouldn't even be able to tell they were from the same company just by looking at them.

Well, this isn't news. I also follow some Chinese forums but also mainly for pics and info on new products.

Opinion-wise probably about 90% of these so called "audiophiles" are extremely biased towards any Chinese products to a point they'll be bashing on great products and recommending low-end stuff from Japanese and Western manufacturers and claiming they are better but most of the time they apparently have zero understanding of actual sound quality and what is good. They just blindly praise products based on looks and brand love and most of them have no love for anything manufactured by a local company. So it can be really tricky to actually get any genuine info on a certain new product but at least you can get some quality hands-on pics.

I'm just going to post this here...

Please don't recommend equipment you don't own or otherwise don't have a reasonable amount of familiarity with. You wouldn't recommend someone a car you've never driven or suggest someone live in a country you haven't been to, so recommending headphones and equipment you haven't owned or used is unhelpful. Even if you've seen the same comments about something from a dozen members, save discussion of that if you're intending to buy it yourself.

Likewise, please avoid trashing equipment you haven't used or aren't familiar with. Having doubts about something you see in a design is fair enough, but to quote Robert Pirsig: "The test of the machine is the satisfaction it gives you. There isn't any other test. If the machine produces tranquility, it's right. If it disturbs you it's wrong until either the machine or your mind is changed." So remember that you can derive satisfaction from listening with any audio gear as much from your appreciation of the design (whether how it looks or how it measures) as much as how it reproduces music.
