I am happy that it is on relaese in China for a few months before the rest of us get it.  It means that many of the FW bugs may be fixed, and potentially, there may be more or better FW functionality by the time we get it.  And yes,  I have time to save up for it too :-)

The X5 compared to the ZX1 is a wreck (aesthetically speaking), but it might sound better and it might have stable bug free UI, but still only limited to 128GB , as there is no microSD cards higher than 64GB (if you find one with bigger capacity its a fake)

Notice:

These are not full 128GB MicroSD card, they are actual 8GB capacity. But they show 128GB in phones and computers.if you are not professional, you will not find that it is !

Note: pls know more about this item and  look carefully on the discription  . if you Unprofessional and never buy this item, pls no to order before contact me.

12-15 Hours are fairly good (the ZX1 lasted about 24 hours with flac ranging from 192/24 to 44.1/16), if it has the power (and I know the X5 will not disappoint).

ZX1's maximum output power is 15mW+15mW @ 16ohm, which is about the same as a Clip+. A nano 7G can pump out well over 4 times as much in comparison.

That's absurdly weak for a dap in that price range. It looks like they tried to force people to buy PHA2 to get more power.

PHA-2 might have its own problem. It has the same TPA6120 as output driver as PHA-1 and the chip requires 10ohm output impedance for stability. The only way around it is to implement inductor after the chip, but I have seen none on PHA-2's PCB.

I'd rather see an X5, no offense James.

Oh, and a USB input would allow us to stream music from our iphone5's and other USB enabled devices.  That would be great!

Yep. I think you hit the nail on the head.

I suggested this might be the case, many pages ago, in the NW-ZX1 thread, and got shouted-down for it.

I notice it's only the men looking at him and taking photos, in that picture!

Cheers mate, without fanboy-ism, we can get what is best for us.

Do you also feel like you are getting closer to X5, too?

Yes.

The NW-ZX1 is a really sweet little DAP - no one can really argue with that fact, but I'm extremely reluctant to spend $750 bucks on something that has such a weak amp section it needs to be amped externally, right off the bat.

There's plenty of options for DAPs if you're going to externally amp.

The whole point of buying a decent DAP (for my situation) is to buy one that doesn't need amping, and will therefore fit easily into my pocket (I walk everywhere so that's when my DAP gets used the most).

I have contemplated the NW-ZX1+Portaphile 627 amp, and I haven't completely ruled it out, but damn... I really would just prefer a single-box DAP. The DX100 I used to own came close but is actually no smaller than the NW-ZX1 + Portaphile 627. The X5, on the other hand, is only about 15mm thick, which is nice...

I hear you mate. Portaphile 627 has a weak point for me, 4 hours battery life. Unfortunately this is unacceptable in my view. ZX1 should be okay with casual things like Unique Melody, JHA c/iems but I can't call ZX1 an all rounder with the same amount of power as Clip+ (geez, I really need the crank up the volume in my Rboxed Clip+ to listen to SE5way in nice volumes at outside).

Apparently, we have 2 different winner daps in here for different purposes / life styles. I think I also lean towards to X5 for both standalone dap and pairing with an extra device options.

I still want to hear more about how it sounds. First impressions were transparent, neutral. I would like to learn more about the SQ.

Oh, yes, I forgot to mention that if I were to get the Portaphile, I would be personally modifying it in order to squeeze in a larger battery. I've already discussed this, via PM, with another Head-fier.

It's easier said than done, but could be done (not easy to ship Li-Po batteries with all the new postal regulations coming into force). It would also require moving the capacitors from their existing position on the circuit board. Oh, and it would invalidate the warranty and reduce the resale value.... but none of that would dissuade me from modifying it for longer battery life. The 627x variant is already offered, but it is too big for my purposes, hence my interest in personally modifying the standard 627  ;)

But it's a whole lot of hassle and expense.

I'm really hoping the X5 may deliver what I need, and it's priced very, very fairly.

I'm aware of the forthcoming Calyx and X7 but they may be too far away, time-wise.

I'm skint and need a job but as soon as I get a job (hopefully in the first half of 2014), I'll be buying a DAP from what's available on the market at that time. My poor old Cowon J3 has served me wonderfully (except for having too high an output impedance) as a general purpose, non-audiophile, DAP, but I yearn, yearn, yearn to get back to the audiophile bliss I enjoyed when I owned a DX100.

The X5 ticks so many boxes and for such a reasonable price..... I just keep coming back to it as my most likely choice for my next DAP, in spite of all the other competitors on the market (most of which are way more expensive and still have compromises of their own).
