The Fiio X5 Thread

I've read that you can use the music card and just add the FW to it.  I just get paranoid about losing 64gb of music, so I have a separate card to load FW.

And yes, the "straight" makes navigation much easier.  I hated the vertical menu, I never knew where I was.

I have my device set to start on last item played, so it starts on the last song I listened to.

I have always used a full (almost) 64gb card to upgrade.....never a problem

Same here - no issues. Actually have had no issues whatsoever with this player or the X3 for that matter. Still despise the dicky scroll wheel however. Seriously one click should be one selection. Glad they ditched it on the upcoming X7.

Can't wait to get my grubby little hands on that baby. Putting away the pennies now!! Must not buy any more headphones.

I can concur that there is no need to use a second card just to update the FW. I have a 128gb card in slot 1 and a 64gb card in slot 2 both are pretty full of music and I've updated the FW many times (using slot 1 of course) without removing one card or the other and have had zero issues. My cards always stay in their slots.

The folders icon is the middle menu item on my screen- however I'm using a modified firmware that presents all menu items in a straight line.  Perhaps that would a helpful modification for your son to do for you.  All he would need is a clean microcard of 32gb or smaller, formatted in your X5 first.  Then just load the firmware file on the card, insert the card in slot one (I remove both cards just to be safe) while the device is off, and start it while holding down Power and the upper left button.  It will tell you it has found the file, and will then update.  After it does, remove the card, reset your preferences (running Factory Defaults first), and then reinsert your music cards.  Then have it rescan your Library.

It's called Simply Straight, and can be found here:  http://www.head-fi.org/t/717947/fiio-x5-custom-modded-firmwares/345#post_10967258

It is exactly the same as the 2.2 firmware that is the current latest release except that the menu is straight across instead of on the right side in a vertical line.  I find it much easier to navigate, and I'm sighted.

Folder is the middle of the seven menu items.  They go, from left, EQ, Music Settings, Settings, Folders, Album/Artist/Genre, Favorites (heart), and Now Playing (music note).

HOWEVER, there is an extra step to using Folders, as you have to choose which memory card (up to two) to access, or OTG (on the go, for an external hd).  I would suggest that it might be easier for you to continue as you have been, using the Artist/Album menu, and just be careful to lock the device so there are no inadvertent clicks to throw you into wherever you went last time.

Oh, and as Huey said, "Every man a king."

Thanks for all your help, Olddude.  I will try the firmware tomorrow.  After my boy is done with his mid-terms.  Can't bother him just yet; He's stressin'.  Thanks again.

I've been using the 64GB micro SD card, filled with music, to load new firmware. Works just as well

And thanks for your compliment regarding my theme!

One problem with navigating through the menu without visual input: the unit seems to start up on the last item it was on, and depending on where you went from the "now playing" screen, you can end up on the "playlist" icon, or the "play by folder" icon.

True enough.  I'll just have to force myself to get comfortable with various sinarios.  Just helped Colin for hours of studdy.  He can give me a few minutes.  LOL

i was telling that you cannot go from a folder to the next when you are in folder browsing... similarity works for this player well, so when you are in a certain group you cannot go to the next using only physical buttons... this is the only thing that it not so great about the x5... and this is one of the reasons for which i fear that i might want to get an x7 as soon as it appears....

Hi everyone, please excuse me if this is an ignorant question, as I just joined the forums and did not have time read over much from the thread yet, but I was just wondering something. I'll likely be purchasing an X5 for myself soon, but I was wondering what the easiest/most efficient way would be to maximize my file capacity? I'm not hugely interested in audiophile quality, just the amount of space for music.

I heard the X5 can use certain USB flash drives that are 256GB+? How would I go about doing that, and would I be able to use two (e.g. two 256GB flash drives)? Any info would be appreciated, thank you!

Well the X5 takes to microSD cards, and features USB OTG capability. So in theory you could load up two 128 GB microSD's, and carry around an externalStorage device like a flash drive or small portable hard drive. Surely that would cover all of your music storage needs…

...So I have been listening to my X5 on its own since I got it. I was an early adopter, and got one of the first to be delivered by B&H. I pre-ordered with them. Philosophically I was opposed to the thought of stacking it with an amp. I wanted it to be an all-in-one solution. And it is...its marvelous on its own. But recently I succumbed to temptation. Familiarity breeds contempt, and so, instead selling the X5, I thought I would try the E12 with the stacking kit...

Color me surprised. It sounds brilliant. Its not like I am driving hard cans (Grado...all the way baby...modded, re-cupped, the works...), but I am getting more detail, and that bass boost...oh my. After months of honest, dry, neutral sound....its like spending 6 months in a monastery eating a vegetarian diet, and then being abducted in your sleep and woken up in a decadent speak-easy by a wanton maid sitting down on your lap and handing you a stiff drink...

Thank you again @JamesFiiO and @Joe Bloggs

I am currently listening to Eric Dolphy's "Last Date" album, and I can literally hear him working the keys and working the mouthpiece in quieter places...I am going to have a hard time focusing at the office today.

Oh, I think I get ya now.  Thanks.  By the way, are FiiO supposed to be eliminating the wheel for X7?  Has the 7 taken some form that can be described?
