Fiio X5 Thread - info updated on Jan 17th 2014 - Page 773

Probably already mentioned:

When I play a Flac 44.1 KHz 16 bits, next I play an 192 KHz 24 bits song I hear a click on the moment of the switch.

And an even louder click when I go from 192 KHz 24 bits to a 44.1 KHz 16 bits song.

I wanted to see if this already was mentioned, so I tried searching.

I found it difficult(impossible) to do a search on the Fiio X5 Thread (it looks like you have to search the whole Portable Source Gear. Which gave to many results).

Am I doing something wrong?

Just need some final decision swingers!

After a recent post regarding its DAC not being too great, how are other folks finding it?  I expect to use it just as often as a USB DAC on my laptop, than as a DAP.

I'm currently using the Fiio E17 as a DAC with AKG K550 phones.

I find the AKGs need a little bass boost, and I have the bass on the E17 set to 6.  Will I need to still amp the X5 with the E17 if I want to boost the bass for the AKGs?  Would I be better trading in the E17 for an E12?  Or should the X5's custom EQ be OK to bass boost?  I currently prefer to keep the source free of EQ (iPod and Foobar on laptop).

Cheers.

I own the K550's and use them with the X5/e12 combo with bass boost on. It's a fantastic pairing this way. The sound is clear with good bass body to it. I also used to own the e17 and I can tell you that the X5/e12 combo trounces it.

Hi Choonyfish,

In response to the bold text above, I can't offer any opinions regarding the X5's use as a USB receiver (I've never tried it), but the DAC itself is anything but "bad."  The USB receiver may be "bad," but the DAC is not.

I use the Line Out almost exclusively - using the X5 as a transport, player, and DAC to various amps (portable and desktop), including my OPPO HA-1 - but only when using the HD800 (which on most amps, lacks bass, just as your AKG K550 does, a headphone I've owned previously.)

When using my LCD-2 rev.1, which has plenty of bass, but shelved highs, I switch from using the X5's Line Out (which is warm), to using the X5's Coaxial Out (which is, of course, colorless).

X5 Line Out > OPPO HA-1 > HD800 (or AKG K550)

X5 Coaxial Out > OPPO HA-1 > LCD-2 rev.1. (or HD650)

In other words, I don't need a USB receiver.

I kid you not, I just now came to this thread while listening to the first chain, above.  The X5 works just fine as a desktop transport and my laptop works just fine as a web browser.  :D

I'm sorry I can't contribute anything in response to your other questions.

Mike

Admittedly, it takes some work to get the display exactly as you want it, but it is a one off exercise.

I just find it difficult to configure!
I can't seem to figure out how to make a playlist.

A question for FIIO:

What is the order followed for building the DataBase?

Does it start with all the artists/albums/songs on TF1, then continues with artists/albums/songs?

Knowing this would help me to divide the artists/albums/songs between the Micro SD-Cards in such a way that my most popular (5800) ones will be in the DataBase. The other ones I could find with the filebrowser (it would be good to know that all the artists/album/songs that are not in the DataBase could be found on TF2).

I had the same, I got (not loud) ticks at the start of each (FLAC) file, not a pop but more a static tick. It sounds like the headphone-out aws going from disconnected state, to a (DC) powered state. This was on FW V2.0. I changed to FW 2.07Beta this weekend and now these ticks are gone. I have to test with 16/44.1 and 24/96 flac files and there are no ticks any more.

I am using the 2.07beta firmware.

I bought the test album from Dr. Chesky, which is 192 KHz 24 bits. There I noticed it first

I just now tried it out with an album from Holly Cole, which is 88.2 KHz 24 bits, gives the same problem.

Compared with my own ripped cd's, which are 44.1 KHz 16 bits

So it appears that when you switch between songs with a different sample frequency you will hear a click (I don't know if the number of bits does matters)

I think its alphabetical. I have songs in the Artist/Album/Songs format and my database doesn't have any artist past the letter M.

My guess is it wouldn't matter if you had 1 or 2 SD cards as it will collect the information alphabetically anyways

Mike,
How do you feel the DAC compares to the dacport?

Choonyfish,
I am not disappointed at all with the DAC in the X5 it and Fiio have exceeded my expectations and have converted an iBasso fan.

I only tried between songs using the same sample frequency. I always listen to entire albums and am not changing sample frequencies between songs.

I did a quick test and yes, same ticks appear again, only less loud. It seams they have small an issue to solve.

Tested flac's going form 16/44.1 to 24/96 and back.

Anyone know if this ssd will work with the x5? What kind of external case does it need? Seems like a good deal for 512 GB. A micro sd 128 will cost me $145.

I would recomend using an mSATA SDD.

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-MZ-MTE1T0BW-Internal-Single-Version/dp/B00HWHVNUU/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1407169576&sr=1-5&keywords=msata+512gb

Coupled with an enclosure

the setup would be about the same size if not smaller than the x5. I have been considering this option.

There are two questions that need to be confirmed before making any recommendations...

1> Is the USB controller compatible with the X5?

2> Will the combination draw less current than the X5's available output?

Exactly. I can't find anyone who has a confirmed working ssd setup, and fiio does not know what works either. Why did they supply otg option but have no clue what brand of ssd drive will work with it? They tell me about usb controllers but this does not give me a brand name. I can't even get solid info on what usb sticks work with OTG. Also considering a pny 256 GB stick but again, no one can tell me it it will work or not. Not fun to spend $140 and then find out it won't work,

If X7 had easy OTG hookup to a RECOMMENDED 1tb SSD drive, I would buy it for that reason alone.

Calm... Take a deep breath. Sometimes if there is no answer, you just have to accept that you might be the first to try something. Someone out there has to take the risk, and if you're not willing, you therefore must either give up on it, or wait until someone does.
